I've never seen a laptop run anything beyond normal desktop software and NOT be plagued by overheating issues. They're simply not designed for heavy lifting, and that goes for so called "Gaming laptops" (lol) as well. They ARE overheating prone and it will progressively worse due to their cramped construction and complete unwillingness to be easily taken apart for cleaning.

So undervolting is usually very good idea to save on heat issues, but that also of course leads to underperformance. So laptop = Pay more, get less :(

I have never had a heat issue actually. I run this thing overclocked constantly and it never gets hot enough to cause problems. It is very easy to take apart and clean (Which I've had to do often, I have pets) and even the GPU and CPU are user accessible and removable (I repasted mine actually).

I think we are getting into the "what is a laptop" discussion.

If you're taking it apart to clean and have easy access to the GPU and CPU, you probably have a 'performance' laptop which is noticeably larger and heavier then the type of laptop Moonshine Fox is talking about which was probably a 'portability' laptop and so noticeably lighter and smaller.

(I'm assuming here of course.)

Really, there's a huge range of features, this one in specific being how portable do you need it to be?

You can dedicate a backpack to moving your laptop around? That allows for a larger and heavier unit then if you are limited to carrying it in a small shoulder bag of some sort.

Not to mention user interface, one of the biggest reason I prefer desktops over laptops is the full size mouse and keyboard.

You can get a perfectly fine mouse/keyboard on a laptop, you just have to carry it with you.

Honestly most games I play aren't too intensive - lately my big game had been awesomenauts. About the hardest on my old computer was crusader kings 2 (which admittedly destroyed it heh).  I'm sure that if I had the computer to handle it, I would be loading up the likes of dead space, witcher 2, and the like though.
My $400 (a year and a half ago) Acer laptop runs Awesomenauts, with a few hiccups here and there.  Though I'm not sure if those hiccups would be survivable in MP.  I only play vs bots.

Crusader Kings 2 runs on it, but it isn't happy about it ;)
