Yea, generally speaking: assuming two orderly armies but only one with a good commander, that side has a pretty big advantage.  But if one or both armies is over 50% composed of soldiers who refuse to obey orders and/or don't know which end of the rifle to point at the enemy, then the quality of the commanders is a distinctly secondary concern ;)

Well, the semester is over soon and the server browser finally actually lets me connect to games, so I may have to start playing it soon.

Hey so, kinda interesting question here - How do people who have played NS2 feel about planetside 2?

It seems interesting and I want to like it even though it was quite messy or confusing when I first played it. Unfortunately I have very little energy to play "challenging" games or to learn new games. I'd also "have" to find a guild/clan/team or whatever to play with. Meh I should just sleep more.

Haven't played it, but I've heard a lot about it.

I'd say my biggest reservation in playing it (besides the fact that I generally despise MMOs), is how chaotic and uncoordinated it is.

I was telling a friend:  People in an actual army go through months of discipline, training, and exercises in order to work together in a cohesive group.  They learn teamwork, determination, and how to follow orders without questions.  They learn how to march together in formation, how to react to unexpected situations, and how to accomplish an objective during a heated firefight.  Usually, after their training has ended, they continue to train for the rest of their military career at least several times a week, brushing up on these concepts for thousands of hours every year.

They get to know their squads, and their platoons, and their platoon leaders.  They understand the way their fellow soldiers, and leaders communicate, and they react accordingly.

And yet, as a person who has been in the Army, you can put these same people in a war scenario, and things still become extremely disorganized and chaotic for everybody, even with all that preparation, teamwork, and training.

So here we have Planetside 2, which is 50 people who don't know each other, who have had no formal training on how to work together whatsoever, who have no leader or commanding officer, who are, quite frankly, probably pretty bad at using their weapon, and you put them into an intense combat situation where they're all supposed to work together for a greater objective?

I'm not even going to waste my time.  And the reports I've heard from others seem to reflect my own fears.

Natural Selection 2 is a much small group of people (between 6 and 12).  The maps are much smaller.  You have a commanding officer who has an overhead view, and who can give you orders.  Not only can he give you orders, the orders neatly pop up on your interface, leading you to your destination.  There is built-in voicechat.  Newbies have a green name so that you know who they are.  The maps are all conveniently labeled by each area, so it's easy to tell where you're supposed to go, etc.

Without playing it, I'd say if you're looking for a more understandable, consistent, organized, teamwork experience, stick with Natural Selection 2.  If you're looking for a glorified Call of Duty with objectives, play Planetside.

Of course I realize I might get a lot of flak for this post, but after being a gamer for over 15 years now, I've realized I don't have to play every game to know what it's all about.  Diablo 3, for example, was a disaster.  I know it sucked, everyone said it sucked, and I'll never play it, and I still know it sucked.  We as gamers literally don't have time to try out every single game on the market, but through inductive reasoning can kind of know already how we're going to feel about a game long before we try it.

Its odd that you bring up the training military goes through. Sure, it would seem like an unorganized group...

But back in eve-online, you could easily get coordinated groups of 1k+ players to do what you wanted. It didn't take months of training, it didn't take years of teamwork practice.. It just took a few good commanders on teamspeak giving the right commands. A few of the group, namely the scouts, some of the logistics team, particularly capital fleets, required a bit more than that, but for the most part all it took to be a useful member of the fleet was a battleship with a cookie cutter fit, and the ability to listen when someone talks.

However, both in planetside2, NS2, and eve-o, there is one major thing different - If you join the military, you are putting your life in risk. You spent lots of time practicing and training to mitigate this risk. In ps2/ns2, you spend a little bit of time in the respawn queue, and then pop straight back into the game. Eve has other things going on, but its largely not much different.

And finally - Planetside 2 includes a very elaborate squad/platoon/outfit command system. It has a set up to allow for command positions, and gives them some power to give commands. Sure, it still requires the boots on the ground to follow them.. But like I said - If you can listen to a guy giving commands, thats more or less all you need.

Sure, if you dont bother to join an organized group.. then it will be unorganized. Circular logic is circular.

Planetside 2 looks awesome for the people who like games like Battlefield 3 and similar shooters. I'm rather uninterested in competitive FPS overall and can't really see the appeal that would make me grind through yet another online shooter experience. Tribes: Ascend at least had that whole skill-shot awesome reward mechanic that made me really strive to get good. But hitscan online shooters are a dime a dozen and they just fail to appeal to me.

Natural Selection 2 appeals to me simply due to the RTS/FPS blend with the active commanders. It's a great concept, but I doubt I'll be playing it.

PS2 isnt hitscan..

Have fun using a sniper rifle at 300 meters with that 550 meters/second bullet. And 7.5 meters/second of bullet drop.

Really? They have bullet physics in an MMO game?

Color me impressed.

I decided that pink was the color of impressed.

Also, it seriously is really hard. That the bullet takes a full half second to go the distance is so hard to actually hit people with. I probably could stand to do a lot more practice with it.. But for the moment, I'm spending the time elsewhere.

Yeah so I guess I've done more than my fair share of shamelessly pimping this game; but seriously, you should buy it.

With the recent release of the free DLC update, Gorgeous, it's better than ever.

(Oh yes, and those little critters at the beginning? Those are Babbles, which function like a hybrid of Snarks from HL1 and Antlions from HL2 :D)

The Babbles are so awesome. I usually play Gorge when I'm on the Aliens team anyway (I love me some support classes) but the tunnels and Babbles they've added make it even more fun.

I got the game a while ago, definitely looks awesome.  If it ever gets bots I'll probably spend a lot of time playing it :)

You and your obsession with bots!  I guess now I know why you're the lead developer for AI War :D

Competing with other people isn't really fun for me.  Co-op is fine, but either way a computer (or sometimes boardgame/DM) has to fill in the opposition role ;)
