This was the steam review I posted in April:
Absolutely entrancing, at least to me. I never really could get into the Assassin's Creed II mojo, mainly because I disliked having to be stealthy so often. And then I never really revisted that series. Dying Light takes the parkour type movement that I did really like from AC, makes it feel even a bit more fluid like Mirror's Edge (but you do have to level up some before you're that level of competent), and combines it with combat that makes you feel powerful.
Don't get me wrong, the hordes of zombies can be terrifying when you are new, because they can absolutely overwhelm you. But later on I'm flipping over their heads and slashing skulls in half with one blow, and setting guys on fire with my insane propane-spewing hatchet-thing, and just feeling in general like a badass.
...and then night comes. That whole power thing with traversal during the day is absolutely flipped on its head at night, and it's way more tense and dangerous than AC. And this time I actualy like it, because I feel the fear of the monsters, not the ineptitude of my character. I've already established that I'm a badass during the day, so the fact that these monsters at night practically insta-kill me if I get seen makes them all the more terrifying.
...and then, as you level up and as you learn more and more, suddenly you start being more powerful at night, too. Suddenly the nights aren't quite so terrifying, and you can survive for a while if you hold your ground, heart pounding, fighting for your life but winning against the odds and having a blast doing it. What a rush.
I have never seen first-person melee combat that felt this good, to be frank. There are some guns, but those tend to call in larger zombies (as do any other loud noises), and I preferred using melee in general. Even when I could use throwing knives or similar, I'd avoid that at all costs. Band of human psychos out to kill me with guns? No problem, I'll just go from cover to cover and kill everyone with my electrified sickle.
I am not a violent person, but there's something deeply cathartic here to me.
I get the sort of feeling that I used to play when playing Quake II way back in the day. This is a whole lot better, though.
I have not had any technical glitches or other issues. As soon as they make any more content, or a sequel or whatever, I'll be buying it. It's just plain fun.
