Hahahahahahahahaha

Oh god this is tooooo good.

Riot first denies their foolish own mistakes.

Then finally admits to them after overwhelming amounts of proof and community pressure.

Then PENALIZES A TEAM for taking advantage of their own screw-up, when many teams were doing it.

So far AF, a semi-finalist team has lost $30,000 in prizes.

Stay classy, Riot.

So looking behind you is a punishable offense in a league game? That's just wow ;)

Oh, they are not going to make the same mistake again with their stage. They fixed it for the semi-finals.

Yea, a Warwick will be stationed behind each player.  Looking behind you strongly disincentivized.

Warwick isn't that scary, so long as he's not been fed. :)

Wouldn't Cho'Gath be more of an incentive? :P

Yeah. I didn't agree with Riot's decision to fine the team either. It's not the team's fault you can't figure out how to design a stage.

Then again, I don't think I would get competitive into LoL if I had the choice anyway.

In this case he's scary precisely because he hasn't been fed.

And yes, Cho'gath is always better motivation, but the insurance company balked at the facility's risk of being pulled into some kind of abyssal plane.

I agree with Total Biscuit on this one.  If Riot keeps this stuff up, there won't be a competitive LoL to get into; nobody is going to take it seriously. (I already don't take it seriously)

edit:  http://na.leagueoflegends.com/board/showthread.php?t=2663221

I can't believe the Riot fanbase is upvoting this madness.  No wonder they can continue to get away with this stuff, the players won't even hold the company responsible.

We take this stuff seriously. Our rules on sportsmanlike conduct are clearly communicated to competitors, and our decisions here are based on those rules. More importantly, this sort of behavior shouldn’t have been possible in the first place, and we recognize that and have taken steps to ensure it doesn’t happen in the future.
Yes, we take this stuff seriously.

Not seriously enough to admit that it's completely OUR fault that this happened, or that there was technically NO RULE that you couldn't look up at the screen.  Oh, but we're serious.

While I think the stage setup was a bad idea, and I don't know if the fine was something the teams knew about ahead of time, if any of the players doesn't know the answer to the question "is it ok to look at a screen showing everyone's position during the match?", then there's a problem that goes beyond just the organizers.

On the one hand, with money on the line, the lines of morality blurr.

On the other hand, turning around in a huge crowd because you think it will give you an edge isn't exactly subtle.
Life is short. Have fun.

I wasn't thinking of "should" in the sense of morality, but rather the rules of the game.  It'd be kinda like having to tell a professional baseball coach that they should not plant spies/bugs/etc in the opposing team's dugout.  If they don't already know that, then something's gone off the rails...

I'm not sure about the fine, though; that would depend on the details of whatever agreement(s) were in place.  But I assume it was in there somewhere, at least in general form, or the team presumably would have said "Why should we pay you a dime?  Only governments and organized crime get to just take money." or something like that ;)

I was more worried that one team got fined, but the "rumors" state that several teams did this. Why weren't the other teams fined then?

The fines are deducted from their winnings and donated to charity.

The thread that was linked twice already (http://na.leagueoflegends.com/board/showthread.php?t=2663221) had detailed judgements on each and every event.
