Mobile games
« on: May 15, 2014, 06:38:34 pm »
Hello all,

I know that the best mobile game platform now is iOS. There is a lot of good games available (although this is quite a different beast from desktop or console gaming). Android somewhat lags behind, or so I heard. And what about Windows? Non existent?

The reason I ask that we've been given a good discount on Toshiba Encore 8 and I'm tempted to buy one, but I'm worried that there will be little to nothing for the kids to play on it. What do you think? I have an iPad and it quite satisfies my personal mobile gaming needs (not that it could not be better or anything).

Well, I could tell you two things about Windows phone: Game Maker Studio can export to it, and I don't know anything else about it aside from its existence.

Windows games are non existent? And here I thought windows has the most games ever made..... that tablet can run nearly all windows games you know... ;)

And obviously this means real games, not that ........ stuff... they call games.. on mobile ;)

That can't be true though? A tablet can never run heavy desktop games can it? And if a game is not designed for tablet controls it's barely playable on tablet.

From Toshiba Encore 8 reviews people are complaining that the desktop mode is useless without a keyboard accessory, and I can see how this is true.
In short:
  1) I suspect that most of "full PC" games won't run on the tabled and
  2) Those that will will be virtually unplayable if not designed for touch screen
And I'm guessing that Windows store should be quite shallow for games too.

I'm a reader of http://www.pockettactics.com/ blog, and they never mention any windows tablet games - so I'm naturally afraid this is not a thing.

A windows / intel atom tablet most assuredly can run any casual game on Steam. And controls.. well yeah. Obviously if a game needs keyboard inputs you will have a problem. But there are plenty of casual games that don't. Many of which released on iOS or Android too..

I dunno why you mentioned the Windows Store.. if you wanted to buy windows games... there is STEAM ;) And there are plenty of games on Steam that work on a tablet. Off hand I only know one, Plants vs Zombies but that's only because I don't have a windows tablet... and the selection on Android is far, far worse.

Hello all,

The reason I ask that we've been given a good discount on Toshiba Encore 8 and I'm tempted to buy one, but I'm worried that there will be little to nothing for the kids to play on it. Simply put, you will not find a gaming selection on any tablet/phone bigger than the one for iOS devices.  No exceptions.  Period.

And I *dont* mean just the casual stuff.  I've always been into the crazy hyper difficult stuff myself, as gaming in general goes, the bullet-hell shmups, the roguelikes, all sorts of arcade titles, super-complicated RPGs (not JRPGs), strategy stuff with high learning curves... same stuff I play on PC (the consoles can go jump off a cliff).

Of the 200 or so games that I have for iOS, there's only about 8 of them that DONT fit those terms. I also dont pick up games with bad controls.  The 8 are things like your typical Angry Birds and whatnot.   But "real" games, yes, they are plentiful.... I wouldnt even own a tablet if this was not the case, as my intent from the beginning was to completely replace the DS & PSP that I was gaining more and more hatred for.  In other words, biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig selection, games of all sorts.  You wont see as many of these sorts on the other devices, BUT, for younger players, this fact may not matter.

.... but the core problem I have with it is that you have to know where to look.  For the most part, things that appear on the front page of the App Store are NOT the sorts that I mention, because they dont appeal to all conceivable players, as you've likely noticed. There are exceptions, but they're rare.   The App Store itself is pretty horrible, honestly.  Terrible layout and browsing and.... ugh.  Mostly, I find out about games in general from outside sites. Research is necessary, unfortunately, otherwise you're confined mostly to whatever the blasted App Store puts on it's front page (casual or freemium stuff), or the gibberish that "browsing it" will find for you (hah).  It may be easier to find games on the other devices, despite a much smaller selection, so that may be an advantage.  I cant say just how they may or may not compare, in terms of ease of not-going-crazy-trying-to-find-things.  But they could potentially be dramatically less irritating then dealing with Apple's screwball store.

And yeah, I've heard that Android in particular is just.... well, bad selection, yep.

If you're considering the purchase though, I strongly recommend researching the heck outta it first.

....and I'll stop typing here, as I'm just confusing myself.... ahhh, caffiene, I shouldnt have had so much of it....  I apologize if the post overall doesnt entirely make sense somehow.

As much as people might complain it has worse selection, at least the selection exists on android. Which is more than you could say for windows phone.

There are a fair amount of games on Android and I initially did some gaming on my phone and tablet when I commuted by train. These days I find myself driving my MX-5 to work a lot and pretty much never have time to play. Either I'm at work, in the car or at home, and if I'm at home, why should I settle for a subpar experience when I have a powerhouse of a PC?

I was hoping to see some game specifics posted in here. I for one would love to see some of the local iOS game recommendations.

I find touchscreen controls obnoxious and while I love sidescroller/action stuff on pc. I can't play them on mobile platforms.

You'll generally find mostly mindless cow-clickers, infinite runner-style or turn based games on mobile devices, due to their limitations. One of my personal favourites is Plague Inc.

May I ask you to name a dozen or two from the 200? Just the best of them from your perspective?

Same here, i have trouble finding actually good games through all of the chaff. Especially good RPGs/Strategy games.

And same here too... just out of interest it'd be neat to know what games on mobile do not fall under the threadmill grind timer principle...

For me it's touch control mostly.. I hate it. It is extremely tiring for my arms/hands/fingers.. and those digital analogue sticks especially.. argh

It's not just tiring. The control SUCKS.

From my own end. I think the best I've played were hero academy (I played only with friends not randoms) and rogue legacy.  Ridiculous fishing was a fairly fun diversion but had no lasting power.

Need a mobile version of cards against humanity. Though I feel the games would end up painfully slow.

Speaking of cards.. why aren't there any open source card games (sort of alike to say, MTG or Hearthstone) on Android/iOS

I mean I have a rooted Android/Cyanogenmod tablet so I can install whatever the heck I want, but I just can't find anything worthwhile... it's like I am missing something obvious.
