SEV works with the Balance Mod. It actually makes it sane and playable when it comes to mechanics and balance. But that still doesn't fix that the engine itself is broken :P

Maybe some people LIKE having games that muck about in their registry and only run at very specific resolutions.

So, should one start SEIV with mods, or play it without mods first? I've had enough of sev for now. And which mods if so.

You really don't want to run it vanilla. I use devNull, which is actually a pack of all sorts of different mods.

Balance Mod was extremely good when I played SE4.

Yeah Balance mod is actually not for SE4...

My favorite mod was Proportions (only works on 1.91 though like basically all the cool mods except some few still updated ones)
http://www.spaceempires.net/downloads-details-532-Proportions_3.0.5.html

which I merged myself with
Fyron's Quadrant Mod Deluxe
http://fqm.spaceempires.net/

and image mod.. (needed for FQM)

Besides that there is also AI Campaign for 1.91

All can be found here -> http://www.malfador.com/se4mods.html with links.

If you have the steam version of Space Empires IV then sorry to say, but you gotta pirate an older version and patch it to 1.91 ;p Since Steam version is by default to 1.94 for which I never got a merged FQM and Proportions mod to actually run. Not sure if they run without each other, but who wants that!

Sidenote: I got the Original SEIV Gold CD ;)

And here you can find all (currently and still) updated mods, it's not a lot..
http://spaceempires.net/

Currently and if you are on 1.94, ReStock Mod 4.0 sounds like the best one to have for AI play.

Here is forum with mod talks http://www.spaceempires.net/forum-4.html

restock Mod needs latest image mod ;) Anyhow.. I feel like testing Restock 4.0 Because TDM AI + FQM is a good deal to have, and otherwise it sounds interesting ;) So.... Space Empires 4 ftw ;P

Wow, I just realized all this time I've been thinking of SE4, it was really SE5.  I got a SE4+SE5 package at some point, and apparently all I played was SE5.  I still remember the hilarity of organic armor and the crazy way damage worked.  I always wished I could mod the heck out of that game, but I don't think it ever opened up enough for me to redo the combat formula.

Eh. I don't feel like getting a second copy of a game just to see how the mods work. I'll go with the latter picks, ereaser.

Speaking of which, do you guys have any favorite mods for moo2? In particular I've been eyeing the map mods.

Most of these are DOS only, which is convenient with Dosbox & GOG, less if you actually have Win95 CD-ROMs. Side note: there even are or were competive MoO2 ladders, which I never knew about. I don't know about many of these yet, so I'm going to spam links which I'll dig through later and try out on the correct computer.

The most frequently mentioned thing that comes up is the MoO2 v1.40 patch. In addition to some bugfixes, this adds some new commandline switches such as No Wormholes, no Blackholes, "/minstart The unoccupied planet closest to the sun in all home systems will be at least 2 production per worker and its gravity will match that of the homeworld.", that can make multiplayer a bit more even.
