So PoE actually sounds a bit worse for it than TL2 is. In TL2, the spells that freeze me in place either crit for tens of thousands of damage (which is really really high) or melt entire crowds of stuff. The rest of my attacks allow me to move right after terminating the attack, and cancel the 'wind down' animation.

Well however you think, open beta is a few weeks away (estimate), and then you can take a look about yourself. I've got a spare key for the closed one as well if you want, but theres a character wipe when they open it up.

I'll have to avoid it for now and wait for the open beta. I don't really have the time to be honest. I'd love to check it out, since I love the premise of the skill system and the gems. But, it might end up being one of those games with more methodical sort of play.

Well, you've got plenty of time to be less busy, LT. They decided to place the open beta/act 3 release/closed beta wipe date on january 23rd, partly to polish it more, and partly to keep first impressions from being ruined by a lack of support staff during december holidays.

Ohreally. Did they ever fix their terrible animations? Are different spells worth using over spamming a single one repeatedly?

Path of Exile has the Materia system from Final Fantasy 7, Sphere Grid from Final Fantasy 10, moddable Flasks instead of potions, badassness and ladders from Diablo 2. Path of Exile also has en endless end game, maximum level of 100 and music about as good as Diablo 2s. Did I miss something? Anyway.. that's a jackpot.

Tried it about a year ago I think in beta.  The concept was fantastic, but it still needed a lot of work.  In particular the pets (one of my favorite things about JRPGs), were really buggy and not worth using.  They died so easily that they were barely worth summoning...pets that suck worse that monsters aren't fun at all.  Still though I could see the massive potential of the game.

Unfortunately I still haven't even completed Torchlight 2!  I also still have never finished Titan Quest, which I bought over the Christmas Sale in the THQ Pack, and which I think I'm going to try with this neat Diablo Mod somebody made:  http://www.moddb.com/mods/diablo-2-immortal

In addition, I still have to complete Guild Wars 2 (well I'm not even sure how you "complete" an MMO, but whatever, just get through the story or whatnot).

So as much as I like Path of Exile, it might be awhile before I get to play it; too many RPGs to burn through first.  Hopefully in a year or so they will have worked out all the kinks in it and it'll be even better than on release :P

The pets don't do anything, Wingflier. They're kiwis. :P

The minion AI got fixed before pvp came out (latency notwithstanding) for the zombies (who don't wander off into the middle of not-near-you anymore) and the spectres (who are still debateable in their worth really); the skeletons got minor fixes but since they don't last indefinitely they just wander near the summon point still. Zombies and Spectres now persist with you through zones and/or towns (unless you unsocket the relevant gem or move the item holding the gem, which kills them), and the basic summon zombie starts at 3, not 1.

If you aren't going to be a summonerish character, the zombies are a reasonable meatshield as long as you have corpses around (and mana to raise them, and the intelligence required for whatever level skill gem you want of it). If you focus on them more, they hit like a truck after a point (the skeletons are still fragile and work best in groups though), and are affected by auras if they're in range. Basically, the zombies can always be useful (though if you stop leveling up the skill gem they'll start getting one-shotted after you reach a harder difficulty), the skeletons are either cast a lot, often (or dumped into a spell totem-linked socket, which makes it more expensive but less clicky), and the spetres are still more or less bloody useless in melee, but reasonable as a ranged ghost.

Well, for anyone interested who doesn't check their forums, here's the Open Beta/0.10.0 patch notes.

The size of these notes reminds me of a certain other game you guys might've heard of around here ;D

Tell them to be careful with that; coming up too fast causes nitrogen poisoning.

My playtesting for BD made me hunger for something akin to truely the genre of Diablo 2, etc, and PoE is giving the the "desire for loot" craving a real fix.

At least in PoE I can fulfill my "minions fight while I command" fix.
