Haha, I wish. Though perhaps I should try throwing 2 or 3 next time for maximum effectiveness.

Have you discovered the enemy that comes *after* the Androns?

Thus far I've just faced the gray guys, the reptile guys (and their reaper friends), and the androns (and their drone friends).  So I think you've seen a higher section of the pain scale than I have :)

I've got my fourth base built with the radar coming online in a few game-days, at which point I'll have radar coverage of a critical mass of the planet.  And in general while the ufos are pushing my interception capacity to the limit, I've completed my second corsair and my air-to-air weaponry is reaching parity with their current offerings.  My upkeep is approaching my funding level, but as long as I keep that under control and focus on recovering every crashsite rather than airstriking it (this is easier with my second drop team in place) it seems like the strategic situation is stabilizing.

I'm sure it will throw another massive curveball at me soon, but I did kind of ask it to let me live the first game so I can learn the rules :)

The Androns and the "Medium Drones" were introduced to me in a horrible way during a "city assault" mission, and as I said before, I could barely handle them. I knew that if I were introduced to the next "tier" of alien, I'd be unable to handle it.

The very next mission, I unfortunately was, in an "Alien Base" attack, and they made the Androns look like child's play. I quickly lost my entire squad and thus the game.

It was mostly an economic loss though because even though I was familiar/decent at the tactical/battle portion of the game, I had no idea how to do the "geomap" part. I built my bases too far apart, I wasn't sure how to maintain an economy, I hired way too many scientists and engineers far too quickly, and then I couldn't continue to build bases, afford the new technology, and etc. etc. I fell into an economic spiral, then the game introduced Androns and the next tier of stuff enemies back to back.

I honestly don't know how the game decides when to introduce new stuff, but I do know that I had graduated to plasma weapons, and so maybe the game evolves with what the player unlocks and build. If that is the case, stay as basic as you can, for as long as you can :D

I'm not sure what difficulty you guys were playing on, but on normal they Androns are absolutely beastly. I shudder to think about the next two difficulties.
I have the same experience. God, them androns are ruining my life. Found my first base....run by androns. /cry

That would be a terrible desiscion, as the game progresses whether you like it or not. The invasion will gradually scale up no matter what.

Just started my first assault on an alien base, and found a room with teleporters.  The beginning-of-mission briefing mentioned teleporters and something about being able to use or destroy these.  The use part I get, but I don't really want to (can't teleport the tank).  What I do want to do is ensure the aliens can't use it to flank me, so "destroy" sounded like a great idea.

But I've tried grenades, C4, and repeated tank-plasma bombardment and I can't achieve any perceptible difference in the teleporter tiles (and if I run someone onto the bombarded teleporter it still works).

Are these destructible?  Do the aliens ever use them?

Edit: tried googling it a few different ways, to no avail.

You misread the mission briefing.

You can either defeat the alien base by killing all of the enemies present, and thus salvaging all the materials and the resources left over, or you can destroy the alien base *CORE* which is like a bright white enveloped in 4 pillars, which will instantly win you the mission (I think) but will not give you all the bonus money and materials as if you were to breach and clear the whole thing.

Teleporters can't be destroyed unfortunately (at least I don't think so). And yes, they have been used to devastating effect against me more than once. Usually it's not a problem until the later base assaults, and you will recognize their use because it makes a very distinctive *ping* sound and bright blue flash.

Quick update. I started on Veteran/Ironman. Survived 4ish missions so far. Lost the heroic skipper Jacob Rieked in the last battle. This game is awesome.

Perhaps I misread it, but I was talking about a different chunk of it (quoting verbatim, albeit via alt-tab so possibly not 100% on every letter) :

Quote
Alien Bases contain a multitude of teleporters, hidden passages and locked doors that can be used or destroyed to provide additional routes and methods of flanking your enemies.

Possibly those parallel lists of nouns and verbs are intended to mean:

"teleporters and hidden passages that can be used"
and
"locked doors that can be destroyed"

rather than:

"teleporters, hidden passages, and locked doors that can be used or destroyed"

If so I would have a mild grievance with the imprecision at such an important point of information... but I suppose I have it coming, given AIW's info ;)

Ah perhaps its was talking about the doors. I never read those large chunks of information in full, I just skim over them and figure the rest out for myself. I did notice some places where there were doorways that couldn't be opened. I'll have to experiment with that next time, thanks.

Basically some doors have a panel marked in alien-ese "Put palm here to open", and other doors have a panel marked "Put C4 here to open".

Hmmm, I better make sure there's no place C4 here sign on -my- home door.

But seriously, I'm so tempted to pick this up on the humble store/gog and see if I can run it on wine.

Theres an actual linux port of it, but its not up to date yet. It usually was behind during all the other stages of development.

I love that strategies like this are not only viable, but actually necessary in many cases to provide adequate cover for your squad!
