We've got XCom, the literal X-Com remake with the dash in a different spot in the title, and Xenonauts, the related game. Xenonauts has rather awesome air combat music (though I needed to go into the xenonauts folder to listen to it fully, air combat was too short otherwise at the moment), and thats all I remember of it, I might go try it again in beta.

Yeah, I'll likely get back into it when it hits beta and is largely feature complete. I got weary of playing the same mission over and over with a dead AI ;)

Oh, yeah, I've seen this. http://www.xcom.com/enemyunknown/ looks more promising though.
Xenonauts will no doubt fulfill my need for gray and dark :P

I can always rely on X-COM Apocalypse. Man that game is good! It was made in 1997 and it has better AI than any game made by EA or Ubisoft LOL

EDIT: BEGONE quote bug! The power of.. fancy.. programming compels you!.. or something like that
EDIT2: ok it worked. (apparently I somehow quoted myself)

I'm very torn on Apoc. It has some great promise and a buglist 3 miles long. I think I got hurt by following that game through development. The design documents contained the heart and soul of the game and most of that was scrapped during the end of development because they couldn't find the time to implement them.

Still I've finished it several times, and I do like it, but I think that is more out of loyalty than the fact that it's a good game. Because it's really not. :P

O_O I have heard this before.. but what exactly makes it bad? Combat, base building, research all work. Oh and there's diplomacy too but that's not rly important in this game. And I've noticed only 2 bugs: if an UFO destroys the road UNDER a tank the tank will be destroyed immediately (I'm not sure if this one is actually a bug) AND a bug in the factory/workshop/ThingWhichAllowsYouToBuildStuff which gives you more money (you can do it very fast so you will have infinite money)

But I never use tanks because air units are faster and I don't have to use the money bug if I don't want to (it doesn't happen on accident).

X-COM Apocalypse is the best X-COM game I've played. WHY DO SOME X-COM FANS HATE IT?? I no understand!

The air combat model is crap, diplomacy barely works, raiding is exploitatively easy as revenue, land vehicles are 100% useless against UFOs and you can't finish the researchtree eentirely because it's impossible to get some aliens alive. You can however get enough to get the C Toxins. MostppeopleiI know complain about the Blaster Launcher and human Psionics being OP, but in apoc you have the most annoying and ridiculously overpowered weapon of all: the Entropy Launcher. How does a homing missile that will eat all your equipment and thenffinally yourself sound to you? One shot and that soldier and his expensive gear is gone. It's even undodgable due to the ridiculous turn rare on the homing projectile.

Most people also agree that while removing the original game's op psi, psi in Apoc wasccompletely useless. Especially in realttime mode.

Despite all those flaws, I still like it.

My favorite part in Apoc was destroying the huge human buildings using explosives edited to have tons of enormously-powerful submunitions (I used a program called Overkill).  Just watching all the various tiles and wall segments and whatnot fall in various chunks in slow-mo (because the CPU was chugging heavily to calculate it all) was enormously entertaining.

Regrettably, the steam version of the game crashes when I try that on any OS I have access to, and I'm not aware of a version which is stable under those conditions.

The air combat model is crap
UFOs are just op.

diplomacy barely works
Works just fine.

raiding is exploitatively easy as revenue
Yet it doesn't make the game too easy.

land vehicles are 100% useless against UFOs
Yes. Unfortunately. (Tanks^^)

you can't finish the researchtree eentirely because it's impossible to get some aliens alive.
Which researches can't be finished and which aliens can't be captured?

in apoc you have the most annoying and ridiculously overpowered weapon of all: the Entropy Launcher.
I don't. The aliens do.

How does a homing missile that will eat all your equipment and thenffinally yourself sound to you?
Cool and challenging.

One shot and that soldier and his expensive gear is gone.
Natural selection.

It's even undodgable due to the ridiculous turn rare on the homing projectile.
Use cover and save scum.

psi in Apoc wasccompletely useless. Especially in realttime mode.
Not always but mostly. And I have tried the turn based mode only once. I prefer real time.

EDIT: Oh and I find Apocalypse much more enjoyable than UFO Defense or Terror From The Deep

Works just fine for me. I have Windows 7. Just can't alt tab while playing or have browsers running in the background.

It works when you use high explosives edited to have 20+ submunitions with 200+ explosive strength each? :)  That's the part that didn't work for me.

Granted, I wouldn't necessarily expect it to, since there's editing going on, but it worked just fine in the original game.

Steam version works just fine, indeed. But no, the entropy launcher isn't fun in any respectable way. It's a one-shot-kill on any soldier, and it's nigh undodgable if you aren't standing right next to a wall you can dark in behind. If it's turn based, well too bad, because now you can't dodge :P

Also, apparently, typing posts on your phone leads to some horribly amusing text artifacts, such as double letters and missing spaces. I was tired when I wrote that xD

It's definitely shaping up. I'm most excited to give the beta a run for its money with the new AI an all. The current AI is a bit...braindead :P

Just bought the game thanks to my sheer disappointment with XCOM. Really loving it so far (Even if it does crash on me a lot :) ) It's definitely the remake that XCOM should have been.
