It definitely isn't a remake, but then again I never expected it to be. Xenonauts still is the true successor
The main problem right now is that Xenonauts is in alpha/beta, while XCOM is (while sounding almost as buggy except for crash bugs) not.
XCOM is surprisingly non-buggy after the release day patch.
I wouldn't say it got easier after V16, you have to avoid farm maps to get anywhere without invisible farmers angering the non-invisble fences and crashing.
