I've been tracking that on Moddb for some time. It looks quite good.
I can already tell this is going to be a roller coaster ride of disappointment.

I tried it, but before the first mission many alarm bells went off:

An campaign mission movie that could not be skipped when I re visited the first mission

Combat that takes far too long for a game with such limited choices for a first mission (is there a fast forward button? The graphics of the first fight don't wow, and there is not a lot for me to do aside from microing to tell my units to focus fire)

The first mission features both long range brawlers that dish out more dps, range, and have the same amount of health for a modest increase in cost (and the same pop count). Doesn't seem balanced.

And, most egregiously, I slipped my mouse, destroying my mission critical military station. Since my mission didn't save, I lost 15 minutes over what only consisted of a one sided but somehow micro needed encounter.

I'm not getting a good vibe from my demo at all.
Life is short. Have fun.

Hmm. I'll try the demo and see if I have the same experience.

I know I'm not being fair here, but:

Quote
Decades have passed since war erupted between the United Space Federation and the Alliance of Free Worlds. A bloody conflict that seemed to have reached a stalemate is now about to change, when a third faction suddenly appears.

That's a pretty long delay.  There must've been a shortage at the Third Faction agency ;)
