Leviathan: Warships
« on: May 01, 2013, 11:50:24 am »
http://store.steampowered.com/app/202270/

Anyone tried it?

Is it any good?

The idea is very compelling to me as I love turn-based tactics and I love configuring sci-fi ships (surface navy in this case, but I think I saw some energy weapons in there).  So I really want this to be good.

But it's paradox-published, and I'm wondering if you can see the game through the bugs yet :)

As someone who has a close friend working inside Paradox, this really made me laugh :D It's so horribly true. That being said, these days they at least have a QA department :D

I'm actually fairly pleased with the QA behind the stuff Paradox has actually developed relatively recently (at least, it seemed CK2 had a pretty good release, and the game as it is now is great), but I'm more cautious about the stuff developed by someone else and published by Paradox.  Magicka, Sots2, etc.  That doesn't mean a good game won't eventually emerge, but I don't want to drop $10 on something that's a total bugfest.  Even if it turns into a better game after that, the first impression can be a negative for my future enjoyment of it.

I've got SotS 2 but I haven't played it much.  Last time I loaded it up, I didn't have any major complaints.

Opened your save. My computer wept. Switched to the ST planet and ship icons filled my screen, so I zoomed out. Game told me that it _was_ totally zoomed out. You could seriously walk from one end of the inner grav well to the other without getting your feet cold.

Yea, SotS2 did eventually get to a decent state, from what I can tell.  Release was a different story :)

I know (I was involved with the beta).  Kerberos is still one of my favorite studios, though I haven't had a chance to pick up their latest title set in the SotS universe "The Pit".

Yea, I like Kerberos's stuff a lot, and I hope they keep getting to make it.

My question here is what sort of state this new game (which isn't from Kerberos, to be clear) is in, and whether it's fun.  The idea looks very compelling.

My very brief attempt to play it showed that it currently had slow server issues. Since every turn is handled by the server, the tutorial had a lot of useless waiting.

It's not enough to make me say it's a dud, I just closed it and figured I'd come back to it after the initial surge has settled.

The store page says "Offline mode available for campaign and challenges".  Does that still somehow involve their server or does it just not handle the tutorial?

I just watched the pre-order trailer for Leviathan and about fell out of my chair, laughing.  Someone went overboard with the puns (omfg, I just did it too ;)).  Looks interesting enough and for 9.99, fairly safe on the wallet.

Ok... I jumped overboard with both feet.

Surface warfare in 10 second intervals :)

The pacing in the tutorial is very slow.  I'm playing a campaign in offline mode and it runs just fine for me.  I've barely scratched the surface with this one, so maybe the latter parts of the game will get more tactically challenging.

I hope that most of the good stuff isn't locked away in multiplayer (where I'll never see it).

It's meant to primarily be a multiplayer game. Why wouldn't you see it? Just dive in. What's the worst that happens? You lose?

Probably because I don't care to play games with people I don't know.

Recently Keith explained why he does not play multiplayer games. His reasoning is very close to mine, if you are interested dig up that message and read =)

I do play MP, but not with people I don't know :)  For the most part anyway.
