You add Kodi or Plex Home Theater (or their newer client) as a "non-steam game" ;) And you can go out of BPM whenever you want by minimizing it if you want the desktop

Yeah you can by clicking on the power button top right (in the Big Picture mode) ;) You get back with steam button on the controller, and if you configure desktop template that's what it's gonna use, navigating desktop is mostly fine, but you can't type (not that I ever figured out anyway)

Actually navigating the desktop IS very easy with the steam controller... takes some getting used to but once you figure your optimal setting it's smooth and quick. Not mouse level, but close.
