Is anyone here playing RimWorld?

Hi there,

Just curious about whether anyone here is playing RimWorld?

It's early days for me (only 13 hours) but I'm finding it fascinating that my failures in the game are as fun as my successes.

So far I've been enjoying it. Not many games put you in the position of making a tribe of cannibals who then hate themselves for eating their friends and enemies and wearing their skin. Even when it goes horribly wrong it is still !!FUN!!, at least on the harder difficulties.

I've been meaning to get started on it recently, but there's been the stuff with Starward and Raptor to deal with.  Now that I don't have to be as frantic with Starward though, I think I may get going with this.

Seems like an interesting take on the whole Dwarf Fortress formula, but in a futuristic setting. 

And possibly without the annual "crazed wacko goes berserk, steals a workshop, and screams demands for turtle shells that you don't have" events that DF seems to love.  Something tells me though that this game has it's own forms of crazy.

Nope, in this game squirrels go instead crazy and go on a murdering spree on your colonists and there is nothing you can do about it. Accept the fact that a squirrel is killing all your colonists.

yeap 78 hours in and I'm utterly loving It particularly how the colony if I set it up intelligently seems to run it self pretty much.
I think my most memorable moment was when a mechanoid came crashing in a drop pod through the sealing of one of my buildings and started breaking everything.

what ever you do though try not to start with colonists with the combination of bad back and frail on their spine(when you click on a colonist click on the health tab there's a lot of important information there just for those who don't know) colonists with that combo walk at a snails pace and shoot like they've got plastic glued on to their face its the absolute worst.

Nope, in this game squirrels go instead crazy and go on a murdering spree on your colonists and there is nothing you can do about it. Accept the fact that a squirrel is killing all your colonists.
I've never had that but I have had something just about as horrible.
a bear going nuts and tearing of one of the legs from kly my 16 year old martial artist recruiter.

It's random what animal gets affected but it's always an animal that goes after soem time crazy and starts attacking your colonists. And only them, they will ignore other animals or raiders.

And no matter what animal it is, it's absurdly strong and can kill multiple people alone before it goes down. Most of the time it isn't even dead, it's just unconscious because your colonists are too puny to kill a small squirrel.
I like the concpet but the battle system is crap at this point. Your colonits are useless in fights and will miss stuff that is directly in front of them. They will also die to minor scratches.

Also, whiel the premise seems strong, you run out pretty fast of things you can do. The appeal of Dwarf Fortress is that you can do tons of stuff and probably be never bored because there is always something to do. You will die anyway before you reach the end of the technology tree.
Not so in Rimworld, despite being similiar hard (but still easier) you will reach the end very soon. And nothing of the stuff you can currently do is that great to begin with. I admit the attempt and it has  alot of potential but it needs a long walk to go. The graphics and the system however remembers me oddly enough a lot of Prison Architect.

your pretty on point there even though I really enjoy it even though I enjoy what it is at this moment in time it does have a lot of unreached potential and since the time it is going to be in early access is unspecified I expect to get there eventually even if it does take a while.

not in particular since I learned by my self as a I went I can give you some advice for persifick stuff if you want though.

This game is difficult to start with. I don't know if it's more or less difficult to start with than DF, because I was never able to overcome the DF learning curve, but although the game gives you "tips" at the beginning it's just not possible to find out what is that I need to do.

I mean steel runs out pretty quick and everything requires steel. Where do I get steel? Need to google. Crazy squirrel is killing the colony, and while all the colonists are equipped with weapon nobody seem to be able to defend them seleves? What's up with that? Need to google, etc... Colonists start to starve although I designated the grow area, why? Need to google... And so on and so forth.

You see, I do not mind reading 40 pages manual that comes with a game, I even enjoy it, but I do mind watching stupid youtubers videos and search for information in internet that really should have come with the game. Given the game good positive votes on steam I hoped that this game would be somewhat easier to get into than similar games, but no such luck.

it definitely needs some tutorials and a better ui over all (it does tell you everything you need to know but its not very out going with the information) although I never did any research for me it just clicked and made sense I guess not sure why so many other people are finding learning it hard.

Coming from both Dwarf Fortress and Prison Architect, two games this one takes a lot of inspiration from, I had little problems with adapting to the game. However I see the flaws in the (current) game design.
The biggest one are the frenzies on wild animals. They happen without warning (you get a message that they happen but at that point it's too late), they are way too overpowered for somethign that can happen in the earliest game days and they destroy your entire preparations just because the game RNG decided to hug you. I know where the idea comes from but the current organization of it is bad designed. Dwarf Fortress had random events where anytime any lving being could go berserk and start attacking anything nearby (mostly your dwarves). For your dwarves it was called "throwing a tantrum" or something like that but the thing is, you could prevent it if your dwarves get what they want. I don't know the rule for animals but it happens way less to them and as far as I know they will only do this if provoked.
In Rimworld however it happens if you do nothing and the animal, even if its a tiny squirrel, will tear its way to your colonists and kill everyone on sight. And the tiny squirrel is for some sick reason unbeatable because this is the second biggest issue in the game: The combat system is crap.

The combat system works never out for your colonists. Never. the only way to be sure that they will survive battle is to build a lot of obstacles and turrets int he way. because you can be sure, they will die if they try to hunt any animal or at least get hurt and THEN die because of a minor scratch. Melee weapons are in my opinion the only viable option at the moment because the aim of your colonists is worse than from an emperial storm trooper. But the risk of getting scratches that kill your colonists is also very high during melee combat. See what they did there? You cannot go into ranged combat because your colonists will NEVER EVER hit. I tried this multiple times and the only time they hit was when they accidentely shot the dog pet you have on the start. And then the dog died after four days of misery.
Melee is also no option because even if your colonists can hit there, they get also hit and get minor injuries. But the way the game works is that even a minor scratch will always develop into an infection that kills you. Always, no exception. You may still live through some days but it will be in pain (the game has even a pain indication just for that).
The medical system is also crap. Like mentioned above you will always die, even fromt he tiniest damage. That's because the game does not differ between damage amunts. well it does, it clearly says if it has a minor scratch or a serius injury but the problem is, that's basically a timer to death. the more serious your injury is, the faster you die. But the problem is, you die anyway, just slower if its a scratch. You can treat injuries but most of the time you have to force them do it (and even then they kind of reject it) because the doctor labour does not seem to work correctly at this point. You can have docotors but they will neglet patients. Instead they will do other stuff. Unimportant stuff. And any untreated injury will develop an infection which kills you 10 of 10 cases.

The game tries in my opinion too hard to to be a hardcore experience, similiar to Dwarf Fortress. But it fails there because it is more like "I wanna be the guy". It throws unfair situations at you and depending on your luck you will survive them or not.

I've never had a problem with the ranged combat, and I've put almost 50 hours into the game. Just give the guns to people with high (Above 10, preferably 15) shooting skill, and let them shoot stuff. I can usually fight off most enemies, including groups of rabid animals or groups of very very angry people. I've also never had a problem with my doctors, but I do also set up a manual order of things to be done (Like doctor first, garden second, sculpt last), so that might be part of it. My doctors usually end up treating my patients more than I want too, actually. I don't want them wasting time and resources on our prisoners, but they ignore me and treat them anyways.

regarding the shooting issue I generally don't have a problem with it unless I've given a sniper rifle.
for some reason nobody seems to be able to hit anything with those weapons with other single firing weapons I don't have a problem really.
also id like to ask dominus/vampire what storytellers they've been using since those change how unfair the game is dramatically.
