Greed Corp
« on: December 11, 2010, 03:28:56 pm »
I have a love/hate with Steam but I just got Greed Corp for $8.99 US and it's really good if simple in concept. It's kind of like Settlers of Catan meets worms and it's graphical style is very well-done.

The website is:

I've done the first 2 campaign scenarios after completing the tutorial, and it's pretty addictive. I put it up there with AI War and Blood Bowl for games I enjoy playing right now. Worth a look if you like an off-the-wall strategy game.

They actually did an article and comic about that on Penny Arcade a while ago, when it came out. I've been waiting for it to come out on the PC, because they said it was good and I haven't disliked a game they've recommended yet.

I think it just came out on Steam today and it looked good. I'm loving it so far.

I finished the first campaign as the Freeman and started the 2nd one as the Pirates. It starts off really easy, but is starting to get a tad more difficult.

Knowing how I treat 90% of games these days, I will care substantially less about the campaign than the multiplayer. have you tested that yet? I'd like to know more about that since that's where I'll be spending most of the time :P

Not yet. My friends I normally play with have varying issues and the one that I do spend the most time with online lately is moving so is strapped for cash. I may buy him that game like I bought him AI war though.  :P

The mechanic is clever, however I don't like the theme. What I mean by that is that during the course of the game the environment around you (hexes) deteriorates only. From nice green whatever it becomes more and more broken and then fall off though the floor. I find it depressing. The balance as is usual for games is a fine line. In the beginning your harvesters matter as per turn income is low. In the end game though, the harvesters are obsolete, as you per turn income is far more than a few harvesters would give you (leave alone the fact that there is not much to harvest by the end game). So when you start off you have to be extra-destructive to get an edge. I would probably be less averse if the number of tiles you own mattered, but it seems that it does not. If you are the last to survive and you own just a single tile you still won.

The pace of the game feels a bit like holdem - when blinds rise in the end there is suddenly too much money in the game - same as with greed corp - accelerates the game so it can end sooner.

That's entirely the point. It's supposed to be about how war destroys the environment (Which is also why there's a steam punk/1900's theme to it).

At first I thought that, but then I realized how incredibly useful they are, even late game. I have won a number of games simply by dropping a few Walkers onto a tile in enemy territory (As much as is left at this point) to capture it and drop a Harvester on it. It gives me money and sucks away their territory at the same time. Even if they take it back it still destroys the land, and the only option is to blow it up, which just makes it happen faster. Especially useful if you shell some other hexes down to 1 height and set off a chain reaction with the harvester.

The AI likes to isolate themselves on small islands so the tactic of using a carrier to drop in and say hi with a harvester can be very effective. Also, using the harvesters aggressively early on can reap a lot cash which you can use to give yourself an early advantage or to save for later game tactics.

I got Greed Corp via Steam during the sale and was able to play a bit, but its currently on the backburner while I try and finish some other games.  Interesting premise so I'm looking forward to it.
