Gratuitous Tank Battles
« on: May 17, 2012, 05:03:53 pm »
In case you weren't aware, Gratuitous Tank Battles is now out:

http://positech.co.uk/cliffsblog/2012/05/17/gratuitous-tank-battles-release-day-please-tweet/

I normally refrain from gratuitous advertisements, but Cliff's a good guy and I've always gotten my money's worth out the games I've gotten from him.

Haven't seen the game but spaceships are more appealing to me than tanks.  BTW GTB is 10% off on steam at the moment.

I also prefer spaceships, but mechs running around with shields and lasers (in addition to the chatter of machine guns and fwoosh of flamethrowers going on around), etc is nice variety for the ol' diet too :)

And the actual combat is a bit more involved this time due to terrain, and some other things he's added this time around.

But yea, space is generally cooler ;)

It's probably not what you are referring to but I like the whole idea of setting up an army and then just watching the battle. (Without need to influence it beyond the set-up)
I guess all people a divided on those who like it and those who do not. I was a great fan of Warstorm before it migrated to facebook and then got bought by someone who decided to kill the non-facebook version. Warstorm was(is) a card game where you build your deck and then the game proceeds automatically against the other person's desk. With a good balance it's a great concept and a lot of fun. But I knew quite a lot people from MTG crowd who complained that this is not a game, where you just sit and watch cards being played for you unable to change anything after the deck has been build.

So I'm wondering if newly acquired ability to influence the battle during the battle with GTB is an improvement or otherwise for me.

You know what, it worked... (your ad) If they have a demo I'll be trying it when I have a bit of time.

I have the space version of this, it is just way too...idk, I can't think of another term, so I'll just say "nerdy" for me to enjoy. And I'm not much for passive games either. But I have the space version in my steam library so maybe at some later date I'll give it a go.  Its good, don't get me wrong, its just the wrong genre for me. :)

This is a lot more involved then Space Battles, a lot more involved directly in the ongoing combat.  This looks interesting, but I can't seem to find a demo version.
... and then we'll have cake.

Looks like it could be good, but I'll wait for a demo if one appears. I own Gratuitous Space Battles but haven't played it yet.
I can already tell this is going to be a roller coaster ride of disappointment.

I'm still upset about purchasing gratuitous space battles. I still remember the day when I thought I was going to be controlling a massive spaceship army, and all I got to do was sit there and watch. All you got to do was fiddle around with the construction screen and then hope for the best with a crappy AI commander. I felt completely misled by Cliff and his product screen on steam.

Best of luck to him if he's somebody deserving, but as a customer never again.

I don't know what the copy on the steam page said back then, but currently the second paragraph of textual description includes "In GSB, the player does not control individual ships at all during battle. The ships fight to a pre-determined set of orders and formations given to them by you before the battles."

In my case, I followed that game through its development and he was super clear about the no-direct-control (yea, we fussed about it, but he wasn't hiding it from us) there and on his website; the steam release came a while later so I didn't really look there.  Was the copy significantly different before?

Not saying that changes what you should think of the game (Positech's games in general can be an acquired taste, though the same can be said of ours), but I've followed Cliff for probably 6-7 years now and never known him to practice deception, and I don't want someone to think of him as one who would.

I don't have a copy of what was originally there, but I make a good habit of at least reading the product page and watching the videos. I don't even think there was a demo (notice there isn't one for tank game either right now). The only reason you don't offer a demo is because either the game is crap, misleading, or boring after half an hour.

I'm not trying to say the guy is a snake, and I did purchase this a long time ago. I seem to recall another thread where people were complaining about this fact. I'm certainly not the only one that was blindsided by it.

The Internet never forgets:
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=why+can%27t+I+control+my+ships+gratuitous+space+battles

No more passive cinematic games(Endless Space, what gives?). You're not even playing them. It's a reasonable expectation by the player that they can fly their own ships. If I recall, I think I purchased AI war at the exact same time I bought his game, and I gravitated to this one because you can still do giant battles AND you get to control the ships!

Too long didn't read version:
I certainly did feel tricked by purchasing his product, and the lack of a demo does nothing to instill faith in his new release. That being said, I recognize you guys are friends or something, so I won't go on about it. It's just my feelings on the way he conducts his releases and relates to his customers.

Lack of Demo notwithstanding, this game's not bad.  It's what it looked like on YouTube and I enjoy swapping sides to be the creeps.

It's also relatively difficult at map 3 once you've gotten your feet wet.  I'm still unlocking things of course, and there's the rare visual glitch that occurs.

Also, as a side note, buy it through steam if you're going to get it.  I'm not sure why his own site is ~$5 more for the game, but meh.  On a side note, it's very interactive on the defensive portion.
... and then we'll have cake.

I remember buying GSB because you had no direct control.

I play them game when I'm drunk and think:

"I'm going to make a space armada. They are going to be so awesome I won't have to control them directly. I'll make the fleet, then watch them go pew-pew against the enemy while I watch."

My whole niche of the game is that I'm supposed to be laid back. It's not very deep (the designs are not at all balanced) but still if it fills a niche.

Feel free to go on about it if you think it will be helpful to someone; I'm a fan of Positech's games, yes, but honest feedback about a business is important, particularly when the thread is about a recently released game from them.

I'm curious about this.

On the one the hand, all the reviews I've read made it clear you have no direct control.

On the other hand, balance is a mess. There is none. There are 2 designs that can win you the whole game. The expansions only modify the best design, but do not change them.

The game concept itself is neat, but so very messy.

<Won't reveal the two best designs so as to not ruin the fun.>
Life is short. Have fun.

Are you talking GSB or GTB?
