Guys, which game of the series, do you think was the best? I have fond memories of GTA 2, but I have not played much of GTA since than ( I think I tried GTA 3, did not like it and did not ever return to the series afterwards) what do you think?

I liked the original GTA, but then GTA 2 was just awesome.  I had the same experience as you with either GTA 3 or Vice City, I don't recall which one.

Yeah, GTA2 was boss. I don't have any issues with the later ones, but they are just fundamentally different games.

Okay I'm done.

Pretty much agreed with the first posts. I played 1/2 (can't remember which) and loved them. The 3d ones I just don't find all that fun. Going on rampages is fun but that doesn't really stay enjoyable long term. And for being a game about stealing cars, the driving has always felt incredibly bad (and tedious to me).

Loved the first two, thought the third was mildly amusing, never touched the others.

GTA2 has always been my favorite.  I loved the goofiness juxtaposed against the extreme violence.  The newer games seemed to take themselves too seriously, and it made it less fun.

Like most games GTAs has become garbage. Lot of the newer sequels to good old games are garbage. Final Fantasy is a perfect example of this.

Vice City all the way. I actually get a real buzz on the rare occasions when I'm able to return 'home' and see the old place. Also, my love of 80s music was revived after many hours mooching about listening to Roxy Music, Frankie, Foreigner et al.

Ugh, not a fan of this series at all.  Have tried the third one and one of the later ones for the heck of it.

The concept is dumb, the controls are horrible, the glitches are glitchy, the combat is dull, the missions are annoying, and.... yeah.  The list goes on.... and on.... and on.... and on....

Not to mention the overall unpleasantness of it.  I dont really mind blood/violence/whatever in games (though I do tend to think of it as bloody stupid), but.... THIS game goes out of it's way to be "controversial" and "edgy", and frankly makes a derp of itself in the process.

I've completely loathed Rockstar ever since.  Granted, I hate lots of things, but they're on a special pedestal all their own.

I can't stand GTA either, but I really enjoyed L.A. Noire.
