RTSs with Modable AIs
« on: September 19, 2011, 12:06:16 pm »
Anybody know of any good RTSs with nicely mod-able AIs?

I know of three so far,

Command and Conquer 3 Vanilla (nice and easy XML files)
Starcraft 2 (though it is rather involved to do it)
Almost any game made on the Spring RTS engine (even more involved, as it is basically a separately compiled dll/shared library)

I remember having great fun with Command and Conquer 3's modding kit and messing with the AI. I managed to actually get my AI to consistently beat the vanilla AI. (Sadly, I don't know any intermediate to pro players to try it out against, so I have no idea how competitive it was)

Sadly, Command and Conquer 3 Kane's Wrath modding kit has never been released.* Even more sadly, I have lost all my work on the original's AI stuff.

*There is a fan project to reverse engineer the corresponding XML files needed so that the modding kit can work with Kane's wrath.

Supreme Commander and Forged Alliance.  Not sure about SupCom2.

I made AIs for warcraft III to practice for Online play. It could learn build orders, but I had to use triggers to simulate the most basic micro. In the end it was pretty fun to play, with every race having 3 or 4 ai types. You could taunt them and I used silly sound files from the game to give them voices.  In FFAs you could form alliances. I ripped off AoE2 and sometimes they would demand tribute and you could buy em off. They used neutral buildings. I worked on it throughout the time I played that game. I also made custom races and AIs for them.

Best ingame map editor of all time. I hold to this. XD had so much fun with it.
Options are deadly.... :O :O :O
