Tempted to get system shock 2.  Still debating if I should grab it or not.

I bought SS2 from GOG a while back, and even though I haven't yet found the time to play beyond the 4-hour-mark, I gotta say...if that was gaming ten years ago, then what the hell happened? SS2 is better than almost anything else that's come out in the meantime!

Is it really that good objectively speaking?  Nostalgia factor aside (I never played it before), it holds up as a great game?  What about it is so hot?  I'm not a huge fps player, though I like to dabble in them now and again.

Imagine the original Deus Ex as a sci-fi survival horror game, with a more complex skill/inventory system. I'm not saying it's perfect, and it hasn't aged without a few wrinkles, but the sheer scope of it is amazing. There are tons of different mechanics to exploit or ignore - including combat, stealth, hacking, research, dozens of "magical" skills - and the game really lets you tackle its challenges in whatever way suits you; provided you use your resources right and stay concentrated.

Bah, I'm bad at explaining things. Just turns into blather. Survival Horror/Sci-Fi Deus Ex fits it well enough, assuming you've played Deus Ex.

Considering I stopped playing Deus Ex the moment they put me in the "here's a dark room, you have to use your flashlight (or whatever it was)", it doesn't sound like SS2 is up my alley at all :)

Ahh I see. I loved Deus ex myself. The problem wih those games is deciding on one playstyle!  Especially old games don't have the flexibility to let you switch it up.

Wait, what? You stopped because it got dark?

I stopped because of an automatic reflex that goes something like "oh look, the game's trying to make me feel nervous that something's going to jump out at me from an angle I'm not looking at.  Isn't that cute. (switch off)".

I'm not saying it's a flaw in the game, it's just not the sort of experience I seek for recreation.

I don't even remember Deus ex trying to go for scare jumps.

Granted its been about 10 years since I played it last.

Not a Doom 3 fan then, I gather?

I actually played a ton of Doom 2 back in the day, I don't recall if I ever played the third.  Also enjoyed Duke3D and Shadow Warrior, though in general I didn't play on very challenging modes.

I think it was Doom 3 when they decided that scaring a player to death is what sells.

Ah, ok.  Yea, I don't think I ever played that one.  The second one was a little creepy, iirc, but not playing up "guy in a mummy suit jumps out at you from behind a curtain" moments.  I could be misremembering, though.  And it's possible I didn't give Deus Ex enough of a chance, I just got the vibe that there were going to be "stuff's comin' to getcha in the dark!" sequences later and I figured an early break-up was preferable to drawing it out.

Got myself Inquisitor.

Regret it already.

Yeah. Not my best purchase, either. Terrible support by gog, too. When I mentioned that pressing the backspace key bugs out the game, their answer was don't press backspace. That kind of crap needs to be patched.
While they own the rights they don't always own the sources. Sometimes there is nothing they can do.

I am aware of that. But games that are shoddy or otherwise broken get sent back for repairs. It wouldn't be the first time.

So I picked up King of Dragon Pass on GoG and it does not run =( The game changes the desktop screen resolution but no game window appears. When kodp.exe is killed the desktop resolution changes back. I'm guessing I'm out of luck.
