GOG Strategy Weekend - Game suggestions?
« on: March 08, 2013, 10:27:22 am »
So, GoG has a strategy weekend promo, and I've never played any of these games.  But I seem to recall hearing good things about Heroes of M&M, and Age of Wonders.  Anyone have any suggestions/opinions?

King of Dragon Pass is the shit.

I remember liking the Zeus game a lot back in the day.

Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic is quite a bit of fun. Was playing it with friends until recently.

Age. Of. Wonders. All three of them. They're stupidly great games. I only wish I had more time to continue playing AoW:SM with King and Litro. Damn that game is AWESOME!

I would recommend HoMM3 and Eador. HoMM3 in my opinion is the best of the series, with HoMM5 taking the close second place (this one is not on sale though). I actually think that many people would prefer 5th over 3rd because of more modern look. This website http://www.heroesofmightandmagic.com/ has a lot of fans maintained information about all games in the series and very useful.

Eador is a strange one. If you liked Conquest of Elysium, you probably will like this one too but it's not for every one. It has its fan base and fans swear by it. If you happen to read russian and comfortable with playing games in russian, you can play the game for free, but going to the official site of the game and downloading the latest version (it says that it requires the key) and the latest patch (in which they not longer require the key). It was never officially announced that the russian version is free to play, however on the forums when people pointed out that you no longer need a key to play the latest patch the author of the game confirmed that this is no mistake. I would recommend to try a demo, but although there is a russian one, I can't find an english one alas.

To be completely frank, zespri, once you've tried Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic, you'll never want to go back to HoMM. I used to LOOOVE the HoMM series, but AOW just does everything HoMM does so much better and interesting.

I played a lot of HoMM (1 through 3) but honestly I felt like the "units divided by troop-type, not by quantity" idea is just inherently less satisfying than more traditional tactical-game approaches.  Same reason I never got into King's Bounty.  If they were more like Fantasy General or whatever I'd eat it up with a spoon.

I played AoW2 several years ago and enjoyed it but never finished a game (and didn't have a lot of time to get back to it).  Never played the original or SM.  Just picked them up on this sale, though.  Now if only I had time...

I've always hated the mundane stuff you had to do in the HoMM series. Oh look, every week I have to visit these buildings for a slight resource buff. Oh look, an enemy is taking my things, I need to run back and get it back even though he's left, so it's just busy work. Fun fun.

All this time I've thought AoW:SM was an expandalone to the first game, and that AoW:2 was the most recent one.  It's looking like Shadow Magic is actually AoW3.  Is that right?

Also I've never heard of Age of Wonders. Is it the same sort of game as HoMM or what?

Yes that is right. I meet a store employee who thought the very same thing.

I don't know where the confuse came from? Perhaps lacking a number after Age of Wonder is the main culprit?

KoDP is THE game you should get, bar none. After that I would say HoMM 3 is the next must buy. I can't speak for Stronghold HD but I've been wanting to grab that for a while now, so maybe I will, though I did just pick up Football Manager on Steam.

Can you explain what you mean? I love both HMM and Kings' Bounty. But I'm not sure what you mean? How do you divide them by quantity?

I assume he means you have one "stack" regardless of how many units are in it. Rather than having a stack every 100 units say.
