I've tried untitled story it wouldn't work for some reason btw I think it might be a good idea to post the links for people who might be interested Bos Wars: www.boswars.org and for for counter strike 2d I'm afraid you would have to google that one because the home page wont even give it to you directly. I also heard of this awesome game, it was an rts with the most amazing ai, i think it was called ai wars, any body ever heard of it :P

Yeah but the guy who makes that is a skinflint who charges you through the nose for it!

Yeah, its literally infinitely more expensive than some of the other RTS's I play, damn! ;D

For me, it's 1/3 the cost of most of the RTSes I play. :)

Well it's exactly the same price as all the other RTSs I'm currently playing.  :P

There is just soooo much good freeware out there.
Here is what has stood the test of time for me and also is a bit feelgood from a community point of view...

Best space sim...
http://orbit.medphys.ucl.ac.uk/

Beardy CPU exploding goodness...
http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/

Excellent if you have a good graphics card.
http://babylon.hard-light.net/

Daggerfall is free now. The best game in the Elder Scrolls series and even competes with the Gothic series in my estimation...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daggerfall

And of course....
http://www.nethack.org/

I actually can think of loads more now that I have started but I will just leave it with those few gems...

Hm.  Isn't Freespace 2 "technically" free?  I'm not too clear upon whether or not the source was released to the public domain, but... I still love it.  I want Freespace 3.

Pocket Tanks is a decent 1v1 type of game; tons of weapons, 2D, tank vs tank, adjust angle/velocity that type of thing.  The basic game has maybe ~30 weapons?  Not sure, but I think it should also have LAN (at least the full version has).
I'd take a sea worm any time over a hundred emotionless spinning carriers.

Gate 88 is FANTASTIC. A few control modifications and it would be absolutely perfect.

Great, I'm glad that some people heard of it, but the sad part is that it no longer gets any updates....

Yeah, community is dead far as I can tell. Love Jonathan's games though. Got Everyday Shooter the moment it came to PC. There have been LAN parties in the past I've gotten a few people together to play Gate 88, FFA, 2v2 and whatnot. Great game. My only complaint is the building/construction menu. Its not unintuitive or anything, but somehow it just feels clunky. I don't really know how or why, it just does.

I enjoyed the combination of strategy and action in a simple game, that my comp can handle...my complaint is that you have to manually go around to set targets, and the labs only have a limited use....
