There's a series of random events which includes acquiring a new type of alien crew for a while. It's on the way to unlocking a new ship type (I don't recall which) but I've never had the final bit fire yet.

I've left that intentionally vague - let me know if you want any more information!

Maybe I just haven't been lucky enough to encounter them yet

You'll almost certainly have encountered the second random event, as it's a favourite of the RNG's, especially in Zoltan space.

It's also quite likely you've encountered the first random event but (a) not in the same run as the second; (b) in the same run but AFTER you'd already encountered the second; (c) not chosen the relevant option in that event; or (d) had the RNG produce a different outcome from selecting the correct option in that event.

Yeah, the Crystals are RARE and you really need the RNG to love you to get to it. Three different events need to happen in the correct order for you to unlock the "secret" ship.

I think the races are pretty well balanced.  Humans are a little underwhelming (but are correspondingly easy/cheap to get), but all the others (even mantis, ever seen one try to put out a fire? *facepalmclaw*) that I've played with have disadvantages where I inevitably run into them and think "y'know, a human would do this so much better...".

Yeah, having the Mantis try and repair anything is a hard test of patience :P. Having them put out a fire is hilarious. They more often die before they manage to put it out xD

Seems like it should pop up an image of a mantis fumbling with a built-for-hands fire extinguisher, caption: "Lack of planning detected!" ;)

I love how their solution to not being able to mod is to rewrite the entire game.

Well yeah. All I'm saying is this could be a huge waste of effort if they put in actual modding tools.

Or why not take the game and improve on the formula. It's ridiculous to me to start this effort mere weeks after the launch of a game. What kind of person does that?
