"Voice acted" let's plays.
« on: June 16, 2016, 04:11:06 pm »
What do people generally think of these? Games that don't have voice overs, but the let's player adds his own with a personal taste and flair. Horrible? Funny? Annoying? God shut up, I'm trying to read?

I'm experienting with a new series where I'm doing this, and I'm looking for input.

My first horrid attempt.

That whole part about the "hoe" was pretty dang funny.

Don't let the Feminists see it though (the game itself or your commentary), it's liable to start World War 3.

It really depends on both the game and the Youtuber.  Your little test here works well I think.  If the dialog doesn't make you bust out laughing in the middle of trying to read it aloud (or just go "nnnnnope!" to), then it's not worth voice-overing.

I prefer it when a let's player gives voice-overs to text that doesn't have any. It's better than having them sit in silence. It helps when it's someone like Dodger who is able to do a wide variety of interesting voices, or someone who otherwise has a voice that's pleasant to listen to. Interjecting extra commentary is fine too. Your sample was amusing, so it worked well enough.
I can already tell this is going to be a roller coaster ride of disappointment.

I read out loud text that is on screen, mostly because if I don't it is hard to time when to cut off a text screen (could the viewers read everything carefully), but I don't try to fit my voice to the theme or anything because I feel myself silly when doing this.
This does not mean that I think it is silly, but I cannot feel serious while performing a voice that is not my own.

That's the secret. Let go of serious. Let's playing is anything but serious.

I'd actually finished an okami lp despite the guy having no idea where to go after a point (he got better, eventually) because he did voiceovering for most of the characters so well.

I think you need a lady to accompany you to voice act that game. But it was still enjoyable.

Btw, this is relevant.

For me it just depends on how quickly or not it's read.

I must say that I am rather lacking in patience.  Surprising, I know.

Though to be honest I rarely watch LPs of games that have much story to them.  Story in general just makes me that much more impatient.
