And that brings us full circle to my original complaint- no depth. I'll be waiting to see how this game turns out, but right now it just looks like pretty graphics with fluff for brains.

Picked this up the other day out of the hope that it will kind of be like a MOO kind of game, or at least have some fun space strategy to it.

Might get to test it this weekend, but form what I see here, still is a bit content depraved ;)

There's a severe lack of good 4X games these days. I've looked around, but they seem hard to find. The problem is also that one tends to get attached to one game that you like, and if other games aren't like that one game, they're not good :P (Such as with me and SEIV and SEV:BM)

Good to hear. Hopefully you find it enjoyable. I feel like I've ended up in the position of defending this game all by myself, even though I didn't set  out to do that but just to raise awareness and spark some conversation.

On the subject of combat, I freely admit that it's much higher on the pretty factor than on the strategy factor right now. You can see their development progress here. As you can see, tuning is one of the things that has just been started. I'm hoping that this includes tuning the combat system to be more in-depth. Like I said, the card system is pretty much just glorified rock paper scissors right now. If you play the right counter card, your enemy's tactic fails and yours gets an increased effect. If you play the same type, they both go off. But it's only modifiers, you still shoot all your guns either way.

It also has ship design, by the way, although that could use some tuning as well. It's definitely a little too flat for me right now. This type of weapon is countered by this type of armor, too much so to the extent that you either go all one type and hope your enemy doesn't go all in for the counter, or try for a jack of all trades which will fail if you enemy goes for a specialist type which you end up only partially armored against.

And the depth, which is still to be increased, is still reasonable. There's a great big tech tree and science research is a big part of your 4 major types of income. Food to grow population, industry to build improvements and units, science to research, and 'dust' which is the currency and allows you to buy out projects or ships without waiting for your industry to build them, as well as use special dust abilities on hero admirals on your fleets, as well as covering the hiring of those heroes in the first place, and so on.

At the moment, like I keep saying, it is rather rough, and yet highly polished in some areas, mainly in the 'pretty' area. What is there is definitely full of potential. Whether it grows to meet it or fails along the way remains to be seen, but I have been sinking all my gameplay time into it lately, and I haven't yet felt the need to shut it off and do something else.

That, if anything, is a good sign.

A quick bump to say that this game is probably patching to beta tomorrow which will be adding 3 new races along with bug fixes and balancing and so on. This also means that most likely the current 25% off deal on Steam is going bye-bye. Anyone on the fence for some reason should get it while the getting is good. (Or wait for the Steam sale in a month when it will possibly be cheap again, although that's always a gamble with a game this new.)

I haven't read this entire thread (I have no desire to), but I will say that if it's true you're having to defend a game that's in alpha from the rest of the people in the thread, I would be shocked.

I mean if it's a fully released failure (*cough*Sword of the Stars 2) then okay, complain all you want.  But when people complain about games in alpha it drives me nuts.  That's why a lot of developers don't release the alpha versions to the public (or sometimes, even the beta versions).

Well I buckled up and got this and I am pleasantly surprised, the combat actually works in a "adds to the suspense" kind of way. There is a distinct lack of depth and balance but it IS the Alpha version. The game also looks incredibly polished in the GUI.. man does SOTS2 look awful compared to it. Also the planet development is very nicely done forcing you to specialize...

There are so many nice touches to the game that when they build up on these it's gonna be a very fine game. Not regretting this (pre) purchase at least ;P

If eRe4s3r is saying something positive about a game, I feel compelled to take notice ;)

I think that's his point. You're so picky that if you like a game, there is reason to be interested in it. :)

Mhhh, fair enough ;) Only point I wanted to make was that every developer should look at Endless Space and the GUI and how it interlinks with the game screens (Yeah, there are still elements missing from the GUI, mostly non-alpha fancy features..)... that is what future and old games are judged against now, it is what all my future mockups will be inspired from. And I do mean the GUI is extremely extremely polished. And it has no load time, delays, or anything like that... And given that I spent most my time trying patches for SOTS2 lately you can not believe how much buggy GUI's started to annoy me. Also it has tooltips for everything, beautiful tooltips! (If you come from SOTS2.. you know what I mean).

Anyhow... waiting for Steam to update to beta ;p

Oh, ok, that way I can justify the purchase as "research", thanks :)

Beta is up, and the discount has gone from 25% off to 10% off, so still a little discount at least. I can't speak for the playability or improvements in the beta yet, since I'm still at work. Hopefully it's full of awesome.
