Okay, now, I have no idea if anyone here is interested in this particular game, but being a bit bored tonight (cant go overboard on the gaming after a rather painful therapy session today) and also to distract from my damn headache, I may as well post some impressions of the game here.

For those that don't know, the game has a multiplayer beta up and running for a few days for whatever reason.  I'm guessing they're stress testing the servers or whatever.   Now, I'm not buying the game for the multiplayer, but the multiplayer does allow me to get a good feel for how the game functions and such.   I'll sorta do a numbered list here of general ideas.

1.  This does NOT play like a modern military FPS.  If you try to spend your time hiding behind things, you will be on fire and/or in pieces.  You spawn, you start moving, you never stop moving.  Far as I'm concerned, this is how this genre should be.   This also allows me to not totally suck, as my berserk style actually works here.   There IS a sniper-ish gun, the Vortex Rifle, but... yeah good luck hitting with that. 

2.  There's no reloading.  None.  You never have to reload your gun.  This is well in line with the original Doom, and keeps things fast (no need to dive behind a rock while you reload).  However, switching weapons does take about a second to do, which in a fast-ish game like this is quite awhile, so you have to be careful about that.

3.  Bunny hopping:  Not really a valid tactic here.  This, to me, is just fine.  Oh yes, you can jump, and you can double jump, but this is best used for actually traversing the maps.  Leaping around like a moron during combat will only make it harder for you to maneuver (zero air control; once you've jumped, you're locked into that arc).

4.  Items:  There are THINGS to grab, all over the place.  As this isn't a boring military FPS, you have a health bar.  A REAL health bar, where you don't die because a bullet grazed your foot twice.  You can take quite a number of hits, even from heavy attacks (it takes more than just a single rocket to kill, for instance).  Naturally, this translates well to the items, where you want to be running around and grabbing health and ammo pickups (ammo seems always universal, though I doubt that'll be the case in single-player). As someone that haaaaaaaaates regenerating health mechanics, I'm quite glad for this. There's special items too, such as heavy armor boosts, or a funky rune powerup that turns you into a demon.  Currently, you can only turn into a Revenant.  For those that don't remember Revenants, they are basically animated skeletons with dual rocket launchers attached to their shoulders, because why WOULDNT you have a skeleton with shoulder launchers?  In the older games, their rockets had heat-seeking capabilities yet didn't hit particularly hard.   In this, the rockets are more normal, but hit like a freight train, and demons have a TON of HP in multiplayer.   The game warns you when a player on either team has found the rune, and keeps their health bar at the top of the screen. 

5.  Weapons and builds:  One way or another, this is NOT the old Doom.  At least for Multiplayer, there are builds/loadouts. Right now, there are not many weapons to pick from, of course.  There are:  rocket launcher, assault rifle, vortex rifle (basically the lightning gun from the older Unreal games, AKA, sniper gun), plasma cannon, and super shotgun.   There are of course things like grenades, and also teleporters right now (you can fling them and teleport to them).   I keep forgetting that both of those are there and so haven't actually used them, haha.   There are also "hacks", which are basically like perks, you select a few of these and they do things, of course.  It looks like there's going to be quite a variety of these but for right now only 6 are available.   As for loadouts overall, there are some pre-made ones, and you can make your own as well.  In multiplayer, you can only carry two weapons at once (bah). I have no idea if this translates to single-player.  Weapons are brought in with loadouts, you do not find them lying around.  I am told there are "super weapons" that can be found on maps (which I assume are rare item spawns like the runes) but haven't been able to confirm this.

6.  Levelling:  Yes, you level up in multiplayer in this.  You know, typical sort of thing.  Some players wont like this.  I personally don't really mind, as I understand the design decisions that lead to the inclusion of such a thing.  This means of course that things need to be unlocked, from Hacks to cosmetics and whatever else. 

7. Maps:  There's only a couple of these available during the beta, but I have to say, I like them.  Again, this is Doom, not a modern military FPS.  These areas aren't even remotely realistic.  All sorts of cliffs and hard to reach spots, precarious platforms to leap on (which are, needless to say, surrounded by the bottomless abyss) and all sorts of things.  This encourages good use of your jumping in order to get around efficiently.   There are also green teleporter pads that can take you places. 

8. This isn't Quake:  Some people are really polarized on this game, which, frankly, I expected. Some love it.  Some hate it.  Some went in there expecting Quake, which is faster and tends to have a ton of annoying bunny-hopping.  Among other things.  This is NOT quake.  It's not quite as fast, and has it's own unique quirks, and you' re going to have to use some different tactics here.   And yes, the game is more approachable.  This obviously just IRRITATES the so-called "hardcore" crowd, but... honestly, as someone that's played WAY too many extremely difficult and "hardcore" games, I absolutely have no problems with the game being a bit more accessible.  It's still chaotic as hell.

9.  Graphics:  Pretty darn nice looking.  Or at least I think so.  As someone that doesn't care all that much about graphics, I can only say so much here, but I think for most, they'll definitely do the job nicely.


So that's some of my thoughts on the game for now, with the limited amount that can be played at the moment.

Again, multiplayer isn't what I'm wanting this game for, though I am pleased to see that the multiplayer is genuinely fun and NOT terrible.  But I'm after the singleplayer more than that, and also the map editor.  However, as those things cannot be touched right now, I cant post anything about them.


The game is currently playable for free during this brief period.

I'm not very fond of FPS games. I play some if they appeal to me. I played Doom 3. I didn't like it very much. I thought because it was with horror stuff I would like it but somehow I couldn't enjoy it very much.
Maybe it was too much action and less horror for me.
What's so scray about an enemy that you can kill anyway?

I'm not very fond of FPS games. I play some if they appeal to me. I played Doom 3. I didn't like it very much. I thought because it was with horror stuff I would like it but somehow I couldn't enjoy it very much.

Aye, Doom was never a horror game.  With number 3 (which, frankly, was awful) they tried to make it into one, because Resident Evil, and... they failed.   And yes, that's the same question I always ask when it comes to horror games.  If I can kill it with a rocket launcher, as in nearly all "survival horror" games, it's not really that scary.

Doom though was always a pure run-n-gun FPS, with a million demons everywhere (whereas in 3, which again was awful, you'd almost fight one at a time maybe sorta kinda every now and then possibly) and stuff kept happening and there was never a dull moment.

They're not going to go all the way back to exactly what the old games were.  It just wont happen with something like this.

That being said, don't forget this is only the multiplayer.  Limited weaponry makes sense there.  There literally aren't even weapons to pick up in multiplayer, but there are in singleplayer.

Wether or not they're doing that 2-weapon-limit with the singleplayer though, I have no idea.  Wont know that until the game releases.

Doom 3 was terribad. I could never bring myself to finish it. So smack full of bad horror tropes and incredously bland gameplay.

Agreed, it was awful.

And I already hated the survival horror genre to begin with, that just made it even worse.

The ONLY thing it didn't get wrong was the controls, it didn't try to copy RE's godawful "tank" controls or something.

....but it tried to copy many other things about that genre, that's for sure.

For the new Doom I'm just glad to see that it's bloody fast (well, fast enough anyway), stuff keeps HAPPENING, and even in multiplayer, which in FPS games I usually associate with a slow-moving emphasis on cover and sniping, you have to just keep moving and keep doing stuff.  And encounters with players aren't over in an instant like in "realistic" FPS games, I'm glad for that.   Enemy HP doesn't just blink out of existence because you almost grazed their arm with one bullet maybe.  I hate that about most modern FPS games.  Honestly, there's only a few games that get this right currently.  The ones I can think of are Destiny, Plants VS Zombies Garden Warfare (a favorite of mine), and Nintendo's Splatoon.   And yes I know those last two are technically third-person shooters, but I always lump those in with first-person ones because in the end, they're basically the same.

The two weapon thing is really the only potential annoyance to me, though honestly, in multiplayer specifically I seriously don't mind it.  The more I think about it, the more I like it when compared to the old method of multiplayer, where you had to run to pre-determined spots EVERY FREAKING TIME to get a weapon that didn't suck.   And players could camp the hell out of these (and thus did so).  That doesn't work anymore, you simply choose what you want each time you spawn.   Technically, yes, you could camp the various power items that appear in this game, but the game really encourages you to just grab them yourself instead, so camping them only risks the other team getting ahold of them.  So that's good.


On a side note, there is a second multiplayer mode available right now, but I've only played Team Deathmatch.  I might comment on the other one after I've tried it.

I liked doom 3. Horrific enemies, great level design, great weapons, and I had fun. No regrets. I realize it's not cool to like this game, but I do.

Nowadays, I'm bored by these kinds of games.

Oh, I can agree that the enemy design was nice in Doom 3, but... that matters not when you only get half of one demon coming at you as a jumpscare every 10 years or so.  Doom's enemy design from the very beginning revolved entirely around the fact that monsters were everywhere and came at you in big groups.  The mingling of the different types of monsters in different situations is a huge part of what created the challenge, as well as the large numbers of them.   In comparison, Doom 3 was extremely simplistic, which is one reason why I tired of it so fast.   AKA, it was boring.  At least when compared to the first two games.  It was also too easy as the low monster count provided little challenge.   The level design I cant speak for, since they were too bloody boring for me to really notice, with the lack of monsters running around.

I wouldn't have been as bothered by it if they had called it anything other than Doom, since in the end, it was NOT a Doom game.  It shared NOTHING aside from the monster designs, and the story about the gates on Phobos and Deimos.  That's it, that's all it had in common.   Other than that... it was a totally different game.


I'm glad they're going back to the speedy chaos with this one.  I'm so, so tired of all of the slow, story-focused crap these days that covers the AAA side of the industry.

Also looking forward to the map editor.  I used to spend tons of time, way back when, making maps for Doom 1 & 2 as a kid.  Had this gigantic book all about doing that, it's like 1000 pages long.  That was back in the day when you couldn't see what you were making as you were making it, you could only see the map as a pile of lines, sectors, and symbols on a grid.  When you wanted a real look at the level as it appeared in game, you had to save the level, exit the editor, generate the damn nodes, and then start the game with the WAD file attached.  And then find out that you missed some stupid texture somewhere and you'd get the dreaded "Hall of Mirrors" glitch.  THAT stuff sure has changed now, all these different editors and modding tools out there with all of their user-friendliness for all sorts of games...

Dang. I was pretty lucky to use the editor for the Build engine that came with Duke 3d. Being able to check your level at a push of a button was so invaluable. Compared to what you had to work with, I had it pretty easy. :P

Yeah, Duke's editor was a huge step beyond the ones that had existed for Doom and it's brethren.  I mean, that 1000 page book I mentioned existed for a reason, because REALLY learning level editing for Doom with those old tools required that many freaking pages.  It was very complicated and confusing.

Duke's Build engine and editor were sooooo much easier to use.

I normally do not like FPS either, but Doom 3 was one of the rare FPS games that I enjoyed a lot. Looking forward to Doom release =)

I do suggest reading some reviews or better yet, watching some videos of people playing it (the full release, I mean, not the multiplayer beta) before buying.

Like I said, people are REALLY polarized on this one.  There's some that just haaaaaaaate it, and others that are really loving it.  Very divided, which honestly I kinda expect from any series reboot of any sort.  Bringing an old series into the modern era is not easy!  When you make changes to the original formula, as they did with this one, you get people complaining about that, of course.  It's not the same! It's not really doom!  *eyeroll*  But if they had stuck with everything that was the original, you'd get people complaining about THAT instead! They're just retreading old ground, they're lazy for not doing anything new!   Bah.   I don't envy the devs for what they're going to have to deal with when this game releases.  But I am expecting it to sell well, but we'll see when it comes out!
