Doom 3: BFG Edition
« on: October 18, 2012, 06:54:12 pm »
Does any one know if Doom 3: BFG Edition natively support morden resolutions?
I know that you can do this by fiddling with the config file in Doom 3, but the config file gets overwritten at any setting changes and your fiddling gets lost. I was wondering if they "fixed" this in the BFG edition...

No idea, and it almost seems criminal (to me) to have to pay for Doom 1 and 2 when most games of that age have been freeware for at least 5-10 years.  I would have paid $20 for the package, not $30 ;p

Doom (and 2) is so lovely modded.

From games that are the base game but made more extreme, to random map generators that let you finely tune the characteristics of the random generating maps, to total conversions, its one of those games that still doesn't get old.
Life is short. Have fun.

I normally don't like shooters. In my life there were only three shooters (apart from Wolfenstain) that I ever did:
- Duke Nukem
- Doom 3
- Bioshock 1

These I enjoyed alot. While I would not recommend anyone playing duke nukem nowaday, same as I would not  recommend starcraft 1 even if you die hard fan of rts genre, I would certainly recommend Doom 3. Very nicely done game, and although I'm not a fan of horror games (I had to play with the headphones off) I liked it alot.

Same goes with Bioshock 1. Bioshock 2, I did not really like. It felt like I played the game before and the few innovations were not exiting for me. But I got it's worth value of Bioshock 1.

Other shooters, such as half-life far cry and countless others never appealed to me.

I used to be an avid FPS fan. Then modern times happened and they all sucked. I think Duke3D and Serious Sam were the last I ever enjoyed before Serious Sam 3: BFE. Then Tribes Ascend.

Other than that? Err...nope.

Serious Sam 3 looks fun - like 90s FPS fun. Is it?

The first two or three missions are basically a "finger" at modern shooters. So they are dull, linear corridor shooter kind of missions. After those it quickly opens up into classic Serious Samness with literally hundreds of enemies on screen, ginormous bosses,  crazy amounts of weapons and vast landscapes. Hell yeah, it's fun :P

It's classic "MOAR ENEMIES THAN I HAZ BULLETS RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!" kind of shooting.

Oh, I also enjoyed the first Dead Space. I liked the story, setting and atmosphere. The second wasn't much of a hit however. I'm also not sure if that even qualifies as a shooter. It's more a "puzzle horror" game. Though horror is honestly not too accurate either, as it's actually not very scary aside from all the "jack in the box" pop up monsters.

Yeah Dead Space isn't exactly a horror game. I would however give it a bit of a recommendation for anybody who basically wants Resident Evil 4 in space. There aren't as many instant kills, and it comes with all of the benefits of being in space.

I loved the weapons and upgrade system in dead space.

It has some horror moments, but I agree it isn't a horror game really. Except for inventory management, now that was scary.

Edit: Just throwing out there one of my favorite horror games. Fatal frame. Has anybody else played this series? They're totally nothing like doom granted, but man they were fun and very creepy.

Project Zero? I never got around to it! Heard good things, though.

Whilst we're derailing, I really need to get around to playing System Shock 2 again, all shiny with its new patch and that. (Installed and ready to go!)

I played Dead Space up to chapter 4 and didn't really get scared. I was a little scared of I think an instakill centrifuge, but that was only because it was instakill. Maybe I'm too much of a buzzkill though. Maybe I hate fun. But like, I link my experience to a game mostly to the gameplay, and when I have a cluster mine launcher and a heavily upgraded starting shotgun that two-shots enemies, I'm not exactly going to be easy to scare. Might make me jump, but the jumpier I am, the more likely a monster is going to get a bullet facial. If, say, I have no guns... then the game can possibly be scary.
Ooh, it also helps if the game has a good long time to build up an unsettling atmosphere. Even if I had a BFG, I'd be terrified.

Erm, I think you got your games crossed. Dead Space doesn't have a shotgun or cluster mine launcher. =P

The plasma cutter feels kinda like a shotgun to me. It doesn't really feel like much of anything else. It spreads rounds, but spreads them in a specific pattern to slice off arms and more or less two-shot enemies so long as you actually hit the limbs.
Line gun? Fires a line of missile-mine-thingies. I remember somewhere in the weapon description that it shoots mines, even though it's kinda like the plasma cutter but with rockets.
I didn't really get much further, but I do remember making the mistake of buying the plasma rifle.

The plasma cutter and line gun were the two best guns in the game. To be honest all you really need is those two and stasis.

The strange decision to only give ammo for the guns you have equipped just reinforces the "only carry a few guns" mentality. Fun game, and I did love the atmosphere of it.
