DW:U will be the best 4x available today, and it is set to drop on May 23rd (via Steam or the publisher's site: matrixgames.com )

I strongly recommend that players of AI-War or TLF who have a hankering for grand strategy games check it out. Like any good Arcen release, DW is built on the back of a simulator. Specifically, an intricate economic simulator. You rule a unique nation and have absolute control over research, design, expansion, warfare, diplomacy, etc. But you are entirely reliant on a civilian supply chain to ensure that your nifty new ships & planet facilities can actually be built. You have only two tools with regard to the civvies: tax rates, and designing new civilian ships/bases. Expand before the civilian infrastructure is prepared and watch your empire come crumbling down. Of course, if you expand too slowly, the other species will happily scoop up new territory.

Best of all? You can let the AI micromanage anything that doesn't interest you. So, if you just want to tool around the galaxy in your latest prototype FTL ship, go ahead. If, instead, you want to design the struts and weaponry of that prototype, negotiate free trade agreements with angry monsters, set fleet posture and rules of engagement across your empire, and plan every aspect of your future research... well, you can do any or all of that, too.

Minutia: DW:U is a pausable, realtime space 4x that brings together 4 years of expansions to the base game into a single package with new content & greatly expanded modding capabilities. Solo dev, windows only, purchases from the publisher's website get steam keys as well as drm-free installers. $49.99 pre-release (or from matrixgames, early release window).

Cross MOO2 with EU4, and GalCiv with HOI3, and you get the epic space grand strategy that is Distant Worlds. Highly recommended.

hm are you sure you arent a kitchen salesman? that post seems a lot like a sales pitch.

ON a serious note, I already have far too much of DW's collection, and am kinda both sad and happy that a complete set is going to exist. It seems ike a really nice idea, but it also seems very bogged down by their giant economic sim.

Super tempting! But Xenonauts might actually make release end of May, and that's where my heart (and only 20-25 of my dollars) lies.

The base game that was released back in 2010 was priced quite insanely. I would not expect this expansion to be anything different in this regard =)

The price is actually not that unreasonable, and I certainly look forward to not having to use their website / installers:

Perhaps Slitherine discovered that things actually sell quite well when you give them a more reasonable price and put them somewhere visible, thanks to Panzer Corps getting Greenlit and released on the iPad.

@Lancefighter - Would you like a new faucet? No commission (but my brother-in-law owns the store). . .

But seriously, I enjoy the series, see a fair bit of overlap with some of the Arcen titles I also enjoy, and wanted to share the love. Moreover, the move to steam suggests that Matrix games (publisher) might shift away from their absurdly high pricing scheme in the future. Which is good for strategy gamers.

@zespri - As I mentioned in the OP - $49.99 on preorder, significantly cheaper for those of us who purchased earlier editions. Moreover, while this release expands features and capabilities, it is standalone and encompasses all of the past releases.

So would you guys recommend this for a fan of AI War?  Is it an approachable game or will it leave me baffled?

I didn't do any reading, and I was having fun within the first hour. Don't expect to win your first time, just have fun going around the universe and trying things out. I think it's worth it, and I have fun every time I play.

Holy freaking hell this game looks absolutely FANTASTIC.

$60 is way too steep for a single player game for me (ANY single player game), but man, would I like to get my hands on that foxy lady.

I really like their pricing structure too. If you own all the games in the series already it's like 10 bucks so they aren't screwing their fans over.

Okay, I thought this was gonna be another spammy sort of thing, but....

....ahhhhh, that looks like my sort of thing.

Someone I follow on Youtube did a LP of this set of games, I'll have a look and see what I think.

I'm thinking it's going to be an "Okay, I'll buy that the moment it comes out" sort of thing.

Some good 4x stuffs lately.   Currently enjoying/yelling at Age of Wonders 3.

I have 3 parts of those. And I don't think I played very long - it had some AI issues and general difficulties with figuring out stuff like... why the heck I can't build anything... and that silly traders won't bring it from that planet nearby.

I'm kinda undecided about getting an upgrade to full package.. but might try it.

Off topic question - what's with all of the discussion of kitch-en and spammy things? Was there a plague on the Arcen forums not long ago? Was some of the spam for kitch-en appliances? I didn't expect to stir up such suspicion!

Back on topic:

Pricing - Matrix has been pretty clear that they will not adopt the standard Steam model for pricing, but will continue their pricing. They think that it is necessary to ensure long-term support of released titles. Arcen clearly has a different philosophy. So, if you own previous titles in the series and might eventually want to try Universe, the cheapest time will be during the introductory 1-2 weeks from the matrix site.

Otherwise, you could wait for a sale, but they generally only do one a year and I think you may get 30% off. I would not expect them to deviate from this any time soon.

@Wingflyer yeah, 2-3x an Arcen release is pricy. But they are big sandboxes, and some of the mods should get really interesting with the new modding tools included in Universe (Kirk era & Picard era star trek come to mind)

@Castruccio - it's a big game. There are three ways to get started:  1) Watch a let's play series for Distant Worlds: Universe, like Das's or LarryMonte's

2) read the first three guides here.

3) Play with full automation and gradually ween yourself off.

I did the third, and I think it made some things (like ship design) fundamentally more frustrating for me.

I genuinely believe that if someone enjoys 4xs (think Civ, or MOO, Age of Empires, or SoTS, or the unnamed Arcen 4x that is coming next year), and they enjoy AI Wars or TLF, they might really enjoy DW:U.

The Fleet handling is significantly better in AI Wars, but you can set a decent bit of automation and posturing and get everything but your main fleet doing what you more or less want. And you can conquer with your main fleet to your micromanaging heart's delight.

It's also vast. 1400 stars. Thousands and thousands of individual planetary bodies (from large asteroids to ringed gas giants and black holes)

@Orzelek, I have the same three parts. I have been told that Shadows added a lot of gameplay and AI improvements and that Universe will take things further.

I haven't played Distant Worlds for years. Does it still have extremely cheesy races and goods, humans-as-americans, eye cancer graphics, nonexistant AI, boring combat and the worst writing ever?

Holy heck this game looks incredible.  I've occasionally heard about this game, but I hadn't really looked into it in detail until now.  I rarely drop $50 on a game anymore, but I might make an exception for this.

So it sounds like you only played the initial release. Which was subpar according to everyone (even the dev, I believe). Wow, things have changed.

AI - vastly improved 2 updates ago, and I know that it was further refined in Shadows and Universe is supposed to make it even better.

Combat - I don't find it boring. It is not the insane pacing and swarming of AI War, but I have played out some rather interesting, epic battles. As in any good strategy game (or life), most of the combat takes place beforehand when you design your ships, your battle lines, and your overall plan of attack (or defense.) The 'rush' comes in the last minute tactical changes you need to make when you discover that the enemy has planned for your torpedo-oriented strategy with distance-oriented ships, or the like.

Cheesy races - no more cheesy than most other space games I have played, far less cheesy than some. There is an excellent mod that greatly expands the races in the game with some rather fascinating and well-thought-out additions (doubling the default loadout, if I recall).

Humans - not just Americans, but white, upper middle class, male Americans of the 50s. Tall, square jawed, saviors of the world and masters of the Atom, come back to work on Madison avenue and convince . . . yes. the humans are still American, I suppose ;-) Of course, in the DW: Expanded mod, there is another "race" of humans, who have rebelled from the original stock. Might they carry on the dreams of the 60s or at least push back against the oppressive patriarchy? Who knows, play and find out.

Graphics - I never thought of them as eye cancer causing. No more so than AI-war's epileptic seizure-inducing graphics (seizures from awesomeness, of course).

Writing - meh. I can't speak to universe or shadows content. It was okay, fine in my playthroughs? Certainly not a strong suit.

The resources - again, a great mod that makes the 'trans-newtonian' resources into real elements from the periodic table and things that we can find here on earth. But do you make the same complaint about the Spice in Dune? Sure, some of them are unnecessarily silly, but it stands to reason that plants and animals on different planets would have different names than what we are used to.

So, sorry you had a negative experience, but, yeah, I think things have improved since you last played.
