I got the game on sale I really enjoyed it as well it even includes a galaxy editor for you to use if you want and the game play is fun you can even play as a pirate faction if you want and it has a lot of customization. I do not regret buying it but I did get it on sale when it was first released on STEAM. I have not played it for a while since some of the updates as I have been playing AI War lately but its a good 4x space game and I find it fun.

Apparently there is an AI Improvement mod that might be of some interest to you:  http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3647528
Oh, that does sound interesting.  I'll have to mark it for play again when I get a chance.  It sounds like they've fixed many of the war planning, ship design, and general behavioral issues that used to plague the AI.  It also looks like they're planning to merge with weapon balance, race balance, and economy update mods - which might help a lot with those issues.

I'm glad to see that people are still working with it.  It certainly had potential to be great, and if these mods can help it get there, wonderful.

Distant Worlds looks like the kind of game I would have been all over about fifteen years ago. I'm glad it exists, and I'm glad other people have played it and enjoyed it. I like knowing that it's out there, somewhere, delighting someone.

I think if I owned it, I would install it, start a universe, learn the basic mechanics over about ten hours, and never quite get myself to uninstall it, or ever play it again.
