Dark Souls 3
« on: April 13, 2016, 03:08:30 am »
So, I'm just wondering if anyone has played this or intends to, or has any thoughts on it?

I haven't played the series in a long time myself... the one I was most familiar with was the original Demon's Souls, which I had quite awhile before it came out in the US (yay, imports), didn't play the first Dark Souls all that much, didn't play number 2 at all because screw it, but decided to pick up number 3 just.... because.  I'm bored out of my mind, the only upcoming releases I'm interested in are Doom and Stellaris (and the indie scene is abnormally dull right now), and I need something to occupy at least some of my extreme amounts of free time until then.  And there isn't really anything preventing me from buying anyway.

So, going to fire it up here shortly for the first time, will probably post some initial thoughts on it afterwards.   Well, to a point.  I've no intention of engaging in the game's extremely irritating PVP and couldn't possibly care less about co-op (which will bother friends of mine, but if they don't like it, well, tough) so I intend on just keeping the online stuff turned completely off.  So THAT bit, I'll have no thoughts on, because it can go jump off a cliff.  I seem to recall that in the older games you could remain online, but essentially "opt out" of PVP by not activating a certain special item, but I'm told you cannot do that in this one, because sigh, so.... yeah, screw that.

And yes, I know responses to that sort of thing are often "git gud", but me being the way I am, I don't care and will do what I like.  I don't really understand why people say things like that.

But yeah, any thoughts on this one?  I've certainly heard about the game on the other forum I go to, but... suffice it to say, this is the only place where I'd possibly get discussion about something like this that isn't braindead or just annoying.

And now, with that, I'm off to stab things and probably manage to walk off of cliffs a really inordinate amount of times.  I'm very skilled at that bit, you see.

Including the season pass it is by far the most expensive game I have ever bought. I do not regret it. Game looks gorgeous and the combat is unforgiving, satisfying and with just enough of a hint of fairness that I keep trucking despite dying.

...because it can go jump off a cliff...

It will happen.
Life is short. Have fun.

Okay, so, update:

I already refunded this.

Cant.... stand.... controls....

After having played so much of Monster Hunter, I thought I could tolerate clunky controls and characters getting stuck in exaggerated animations.  Getting stuck in exaggerated animations is half of what Monster Hunter is after all.   So I figured, okay, it wont bug me too much when this game inevitably does it.

I was wrong.

NOW I remember why I didn't play Dark Souls much.  I *don't* remember why I played Demon's Souls so much.   Except that I hadn't really become a PC gamer yet at that time, so there probably just wasn't anything else to play.

I will say the game was nice looking, but that doesn't mean much to me.

Of course this also brings up a flaw with the stupid refund system, which is that you only get 2 hours.  It was either refund it RIGHT THE HELL NOW, or never get another chance.  I don't entirely feel like I had enough time with it to fully judge, but.... I don't want another major game stuck on my list because I spent 2.3 hours with it.

Though, honestly, if something doesn't grab my interest completely within the first hour, I usually don't stick with it anyway.   So I guess that works out well enough.

Ugh.  I really did buy this pretty much JUST to hold me over until Doom.   There's just nothing else to get right now, which is frustrating.  Back to SUPERHOT and Viscera Cleanup Detail.

It did however make me want to go play Monster Hunter.

Playing Monster Hunter is victory.

Playing Monster Hunter is victory.

I certainly always thought so.

....except when you get run over by something because your character stops and goes "HELL YEAH! POTION!!!"  Victory often doesn't happen after that.

Though that's so damn funny that I never really found it frustrating.

The only thing that ever really bugged me about MH is that eventually, multiplayer is a bit forced on you if you want to continue, you reach a point where you CANT solo further battles, because you haven't enough power to defeat the monsters before time runs out.  Not too hard to find others to join with though and it's one of the only games where I *don't* hate the co-op.

And I just remembered that I bought a copy of MH 4 Ultimate recently and HAVENT started it yet.  I guess that can work for something new to do.   Though I wonder how in the world I forgot that I'd bought it; it makes sense when it's a Steam purchase, but it doesn't make sense when it's a physical copy that I drove out to the Gamestop to get.

I'm bitter about the accessibility. There isn't a US PC, hand held devices aren't for me, and buying a WiiU just for Monster Hunter is not a reasonable course of action.

The Wii U version of the game is very inferior anyway.  Frankly, I'm surprised it's still around.  It's just number 3, after all.  I don't think the series is coming back to actual consoles anytime soon.  It doesn't do very well on them apparently.  Capcom dumped the idea after 3.

Annoyed the hell out of me, but it does make sense.  I don't generally like Capcom's way of doing things, but in this specific case I can agree with their decision.

Capcom honestly seems to have no idea where to put monster hunter, as far as I've heard about it.

I just hope the localisation for the next fire emblem isn't as bad as I've heard it is.
Wha? I haven't heard anything in terms of bad localization for Fates.

just from what I heard on the co optional podcast they went on about how some of the characters had been ruined by the localisation I cant remember if this was for all 3 versions but I would love to be proven wrong there seeing as how that games the only thing for the ds I've got that I'm interested in like at all.

1. Always play with a controller. It was never made for PC. Don't expect M+Kb to work.

2. Wait. Wait. Wait. The game is buggy and EXTREMELY crash prone right now. Wait for patches.

3. Never play with M+Kb.

4. Did I mention controller?

I play *everything* with a controller unless it's a strategy game.

If it doesn't support a controller?  Screw that.  MOUSE EMULATION.  I'll use a damn controller anyway.

Though most games I have don't need a mouse anyway.

Didn't actually spot any bugs/issues while playing this myself, but then I had it for like 90 minutes.  Now it has gone back to wherever it spawned in.

Situations like this remind me why I stuck with Windows 7.

5 hours in and not a single crash. Huzzah!
