Conquest of Elysium
« on: October 25, 2012, 02:19:39 pm »

I'm a bit of a fantasy-strategy grognard, so the concept is promising to me.

Anyone know if it's good?

The screenshots are quite off-putting.

The same could be said of Master of Magic and Dominions 3, but sure, that is one thing against it.

I read some reviews, as it interested me too.  It was compared to Dominions 3 (which I've never played) quite often, saying it was a little simplified from that and apparently from the same people.

They also mentioned no tutorial, and that the randomness in level generation can be unfair with unwinnable games due to the strength of close by neutral critters.

Not sure what to make of it either to be honest though.

If it really is by the same folks as did Dominions 3, it's got potential.  That game had flaws, to be sure, but it was a solid strategy game (imo) .

I am a beta tester for the game and talk to the developer on a fairly regular basis.  It is by the same team (a 2 man team in Sweeden) as Dominions 3.  In my opinion the game is great but you need to know what you are getting into.  Basically it is a turn-based fantasy strategy game with heavy roguelike elements.  The games are short and sweet, and you need to keep all your territories defended or they will get taken over by roaming creep or other factions.  The game is rough around the edges graphically, but it is very stable.  The hallmark of the game is how different the 17 different classes play.  Every single one feels quite different.  For 9.99, you can't go wrong.  It originally launched on Desura for 29.99.

They also patch the game fairly regularly and incorporate user feedback.  The guys who make the game have full time jobs so the patches don't come out with Arcen speed, but they do a very good job of fixing what is broken in a timely manner.  In the most recent patch they added a new class.

The interface is a bit of a nightmare but not because it is too complex, but rather because it is so old school.  You'll need to have a look at the manual to make sure you understand what is going on.

Dominon 3 has 400 pages manual, so this does not come as a surprise.

Luckily the CoE 3 manual is MUCH shorter.  It is Dominions for people with busy schedules and limited playtime.

I think that steam description should have said "from creators of Dominion 3". I did not give it a second glance without that.

I gave it a second glance without that, but "from the creators of Dominions 3" definitely raised its interest in my eyes by a few hundred percent.

Don't want to offend anybody, but from what I've seen it feels like HMM5 but without tactical battles. And with bleak graphics. I'm not saying it's a bad game, I'm just saying, that you definitely need to be hardcore to enjoy it.

No offense taken ;)  Thanks for letting us know.  I'll still get it at some point anyway but not having sky-high expectations will make me more likely to enjoy it.
