Undertale
« on: November 17, 2015, 10:40:34 pm »
I'm pretty surprised that tehre is no Undertale in this forum already considering the whole world talks about it.

For those who don't know what this game is about, it's a rather unique game that blends different genres like RPG, Bullet hell, puzzle and some other stuff. It is heavenly inspired from the Earthbound/Mother series both visually and from the gameplay (at least at first glance) but makes soemthing very unique.
The game allows you to resolve combat without fighting. every monster can be "spared" an option that appears after you've solved small puzzles during the fight. Sparing means the monster will depart friendly from you. Overall this means you don't have to kill anyone in the entire game. But on the other hand you CAN kill everyone. The game features different endings depending on the decisions you make.
Battles are really interesting, they are a mix of turn-based RPG battles with bullet hell sections. On your turn you take a typical rpg action like fight, use an item or use an ability. On the enemy turn your character is represented as heart and the enemy uses different real-time bullet patterns against you that you have to dodge with your heart otherwise you receive damage. Especially the bossed have harder patterns that cannot be easily dodged.

I completed the game already twice and was very entertained with it. For a rpg it has a rather high replayability because of the different actions you can take. The problem is, I cannot tell much about the story because the game is best played when you don't know anything.
At least I can say that you play a human kid that drops into a cavern full of monsters and wants to find a way out.

Of course it is but that does not come by surprise. The lead developer had already before excellent experience in making music.
He did some for Homestuck (a web comic) and for mods.

Undertale is one of my favorite games, ever. Every boss fight was a unique and amazing experience. I loved how cleverly it used its different gameplay mechanics.

Spoilers for all three endings:
Spoiler for Hiden:
and how the game mechanics featured into the story line. How your ability to save and load is justified by an in-game character trait, the determination of your human soul. And that Flowey/Asriel also has this because of Alphys' experiments, but he can't use it when you're in the game because you have a human soul and he doesn't (at first.) It breaks the fourth wall in such a genius way. And how Sans and Flowey are aware of the fact that you can do this and abuse the game's mechanics in their fights. It's all so clever and brilliantly-written.

Speaking of which, the eldritch horror of the neutral boss fight was an incredible feeling. I was on Skype with a friend playing it at the same time, and we were both yelling at each other over how insane it all was.
I can already tell this is going to be a roller coaster ride of disappointment.

Great to see a thread for this game. It's easily my game of the year.

If you haven't played it yet, my advice is don't read any spoilers or reviews. Download the demo, play it. Then go right to buying it if you like it.  The amount of love put into the game is amazing.

I have more specifics I could go into, but I really would rather not spoil it for those that haven't experienced it yet.

I will say on one play through I made it to the "you're going to have a bad time" boss. Such an insane fight. Had to give up and YouTube the fight/ending after.

So I got as far as waterfalls where Undine chases you through the maze that seemingly has no end.
I tried a dozen times and it's been an exercise in frustration. There is no indication where to go to find the exit, all parts of the maze look decidedly uniform, and the attacks very soon become unavoidable and then you die.

I don't think I'm returning to this game again. There is certainly nothing that would make this a "game of the year" to me.

I finally discovered this little gem after stumbling across it dozen times, and just walking by ("this is some childish stuff" - was my first, and only, thought).

Now, I pray to the gaming gods to forgive me my blindness and ignorance :)
Trivia: Warhammer Online is best game ever made.
