CloudFlare?
« on: January 04, 2013, 03:42:20 am »
I noticed that recently (well, today) the Arcen forums started using http://www.cloudflare.com I've never heard of CloudFlare before so I naturally got interested. It looks like it's some kind of a server proxy: you point your dns record to their server and their server fetches and cashes your content. It's supposed to be faster (which I can understand if they have geo aware CDNs) and also more secure (the mechanism of that one still is not quite clear to me).

If this is appropriate, can Arcen please share, were did they learn about the platform, why they choose it and what goals they wanted to achieve by using this. Also after awhile it would be interesting to get feedback, if it became all it was hoped for.

A side note, a single time on Arcene mantis today I got a generic CloudFlare error page saying that something is broken. I refreshed and it started working again.

The one thing I know about CloudFlare is that they are very good at blocking DDOS attacks.

Yeah, Chris added them yesterday. Among other things, they should help us with faster page loads for folks that aren't near our webhost's servers. For example, zespri, you are in NZ, right? If so, is site loading any faster for you?

Also, ideally they will help cut down on some of the forum spam and such, so that we can spend less time dealing with that on staff.

It's been giving me "web site is off-line" intermittently today again. Good that they have "Go directly" button....
