Call me a DF monster , but :

i made a "Blitzkerig" Machine thanks to the Computing thingy which i had knowledge of for years , as said , Computing is AWESOME

but you won't understand what in the hell's world is Computing if you only just plaid DF

anyways , for that party thing :

you can cancel parties even with a meeting zone set using a table : just free the table and everyone will run away to do jobs

Cool! Vonduus, Frozen Critical, this might be your time to upgrade if you haven't done so :) You can see the topic for details, and it looks like you'll be a little more than a month out if you join.

Yeah, but I am in deep trouble these days. Problem is, I want to play AIWar, and I also want to play DF, but in the meantime I have found yet another great game series: Men of War. It is Real Time Tactics, you control individual soldiers, squads and tanks in WWII. And it is in the same spirit as AIWar and DF concerning "Loosing is fun". I guess  I'll start a particular thread on this game, rather than putting a lot of off-topic stuff in this one.

My biggest problem is time. I have organized my life in a way so that I have to spend the least amount of time possible in RL, but still, there is only 24 hours in one day.

I regularly read the dev notes on Bay12, and it seems the worst bugs has been ironed out. Especially the military stuff seems to be working now. So yes, I guess I will be upgrading soon.

Several more LP vids are up in the same place now, if you have a couple of hours to kill. They depict the rise and fall (and reclaimation and fall xD) of the proud fort "Clobbertreaties".

Sorry for very silly question, as you can guess from it I've never ever played DF. Is it even possible to "win"? ?ll the LPs end with fall....

The entire DF gameplay is based around the fact that eventually, your fortress will fall.
How gracefully you go is the main thing..

I personally have lost my last two forts to incredibly bad save game practices - I tend to leave DF running all day old.. it doesnt seem to like that :( (crashed twice after about ~8 hours straight..)
is DF supposed to use 800mb+ ram?

DF uses humongous amounts of RAM on occasiona, so I'm not sure if it's supposed to. How about you enable seasonal (or at least yearly) autosaves?

Because they take up a lot of space. To activate autosave, find the "d_init.txt" in your \data\init folder. The first option in there is the autosave option.

Quote
Use these to control the automatic saving behavior in the dwarf fortress mode of game.  AUTOSAVE can be set to NONE, SEASONAL or YEARLY.  This updates your save at these intervals, so that some of your progress will be saved in case of system instability.  You can set AUTOBACKUP to YES if you want the updated save to be copied to another folder so that you'll have several copies of your world at different times.  Set AUTOSAVE_PAUSE to YES if you want the game to pause every time it autosaves.

[AUTOSAVE:YEARLY]
[AUTOBACKUP:NO]
[AUTOSAVE_PAUSE:NO]
