Yeah, sorry, meant to repost it but then work called and blah blah blah etc Real-life-excuses ;)

Your absolutely right as far as the library goes.  EA, by all indications, is going to do EA-only for Origin, which makes it pretty unattractive for me to shop there.  And thinking about it now, I didn't buy SC2 from Blizzard's online store, but rather the retailer nearby.  I have this gut feeling that I would buy any EA games I wanted (a list that gets shorter with each passing week) from a retailer as well, which defeats the purpose of Origin.  And with Origin raising the digital prices (instead of lowering them...) that makes it even further unattractive.

Steam brings with it a lot of nice features and has Valve behind it, a developer I can put some trust/faith in.  Or at the very least, they give off a down-to-earth-feeling and seem to care about their customers.  EA, not so much.  They are just forcing me to buy from the store for no reason other than they don't have to pay Steam anything.  (granted, we have no idea what is really going on behind the doors with EA and Valve) Sorry, but strong arming me just doesn't sit well with me, especially when there is no benefit to it.

If they wish to make their games exclusive to Origin, by all means go right ahead.  See how well that works out for you because I'm willing to bet, it won't work out much better than the first time.  (But I may also be wrong, its hard to tell what the general consumer will do...)

The thing with that is that a lot of people were saying the same thing about Steam for a long time when it was new (and some of them still are), and it took them quite a while to earn the reputation they have now.  They didn't just get there magically overnight.  I suppose the feelings people have toward EA didn't come out of nowhere, either, though...

If I'm not mistaken, Valve had only produced Half Life 1 and maybe Counter-strike by then when Steam was released with HL2. Granted, I came on the PC scene several years after Steam came into being so I have no idea what I would has said then.

So in essence, they, Valve, had no track record of what their company would do.  EA has been around for years and produced hundreds of games.  This makes it pretty easy to predict their actions.  I would love to be surprised and have Origin be better than Steam, as it would force Valve to up the ante.  But I seriously doubt Origin will....
