Bot
« on: December 30, 2015, 10:25:51 pm »
Wow, this has to be the most annoying bot ever seen. And even for something I couldn't care less.

Why is there actually no bot protection on the board?

I'm going to presume you mean the one that's snuck into the starbound rogue forum and yea it is annoying thing is(of course I'm making an estimated guess here) if there wasn't bot protection I imagine that there would be a hell of a lot more not just acasionly. edit just noticed how egregious that bot is holy shit.

Not only in Starward Rogue, he plastered the entire forum with this shit. Most of the time bots only make one or two threads and leave but this one was clever enough to choose every forum and posted his trash.
God, some people have way to much free time on their hand to program this shit.

My favorite was the one that seemed to be posting in doge. "So kit.chen. So spam." and so on.

I don't remember if the actual topic was about everyone's favorite household room, but the structure was like that, including the "so spam." verbatim. Funny to see how they adapt (and sometimes fail) to bypass the filters.

But yeah this one is extreme.
I can already tell this is going to be a roller coaster ride of disappointment.

I deleted all of his posts (We have a handy button for that), and got rid of him. Hopefully he won't be back.

In regards to the lack of bot protection, the most effective bot protection also impacts humans, and bots are able to evolve faster than the protection can.

I must have missed this one.  Not that this is any loss.

Ugh.  I *hate* anyone that makes these accursed things.  All they do is run around and cause trouble while advertising extremely shady things.   I always wanna punch those that make them, but I cannot seem to do so by simply hitting the monitor, so that's a no-go.  Bah.

It could be worse though, much worse.

The autism forum I go to uses the absolutely-beyond-godawful Cloudflare service to "protect" the site (note the sarcastic quotes here), and.... all it does is interfere with ACTUAL users (complaints about it are FREQUENT), while allowing SWARMS of bots in (which it never, EVER notices... if it has ever stopped even a single one, or protected the site in any real way, I'd be absolutely stunned with surprise; it's THAT bad).  And those bots are always the sorts that will go into a forum section, and drown multiple pages in advertisements, gibberish, and advertisements that are full of gibberish.   It's pathetic.

HERE we only get them rarely.  Quite thankful for this fact, really... the things are so annoying.

It always feels like the amount of noticed bots is related to how willing the admins are to keep things cleaned up.

Yea, we're basically the bot protection. When we're on vacation, it gets a bit wild-west.

You know, something's occurred to me:  If you guys want, and would give me the ability, I could knock these stupid things out for you.  I'm always on the forums here during the night and can catch these stupid things quickly.  So I offer up my services in that regard if you'd like.

That being said, the newest bot I just saw is the dumbest one yet.  It gives a usual advertisement of stupid things, but before that it gives you a poll, and you choose white or blue for.... some reason.

Who thinks these things up?  Extremely drunken space gnomes, I assume.

Okay, shutting these things down is satisfying as heck.   I've always wanted to pop their stupid "BECOME A MILLIONARE FROM HOME HERE'S SOME VIRUSES!!!!11" topics.   That just totally makes my whole night.
