Arcen Album Art
« on: September 24, 2012, 01:05:10 pm »
I am currently collecting (and converting to MP3) the soundtracks from all the games by Arcen for myself. Is there album art out already for this stuff or should I put some together myself?

Shhh...
I think Pablo Vega will want you to buy the soundtracks individually...  ;)

(Stealth question to the man behind the music about whether converting the OSTs to MP3 is actually 'legal')

Oh, it's legal. I am not distributing anything.

Sadly I don't have the money to buy the soundtracks if they are available.

Hmm
See, I don't know that much about buying music, or what buying it is supposed to allow you to do. Most of it's just on youtube or whatever as a free listen, or you can buy it for 2$.... my impression was always that purchased music was purchased for its portability, or maybe for use as a variety of formats. What technically constitutes pirating music?
In secret, I've converted the AI War and AVWW songs to MP3, and kept them on my MP3 player, I'm just worried about whether that is okay to do or not. I mean I'm kinda used to doing that with music, but it's usually with music that isn't quite as good. Quality deserves as much respect as I can give it.

As far as album art goes, I have no idea. I don't want to divert the thread at all. Just, maybe get an answer on my question which is somewhat related. At a guess you'll basically have to use game logo art kinda like on the website where you buy the games?

I don't know the technical legalities, but I don't think Pablo has any qualms about any personal use you might put the games' ogg files to.  They're not as high-quality as the actual for-sale soundtracks, I think, though I don't think that's the deciding factor.

The youtube "soundtrack" videos might be a little irksome since they're basically unauthorized redistribution, but I don't know how he feels about those either.  Generally I'd think it's common courtesy to ask an artist before actually rebroadcasting something they did, unless some license already exists permitting it.  But it's possible they did actually ask, I dunno.

The AVWW soundtrack is available on bandcamp and amazon; the AIW base game soundtrack is available on amazon.  I'm not sure about what else is actually up right now.  Some of them were on iTunes at some point, I think, but he took them down because the ongoing fees were so high relative to ongoing sales.

Technically you don't even need to convert to hear the music if you found said folder, reasonably good media players (CCCP pack, VLC, other things that aren't windows media player) can play oggs just fine.

Currently what's available is AI War OST and AVWW OST on iTunes, Amazon and Bandcamp. Buying these gives you a higher quality sound, so I definitely buy them because I'm somewhat an audiophile.

There is a MASSIVE quality difference between the bought soundtrack and the in game audio. I mean ridiculus difference. I was flabberghasted at how massive the difference was. :P

You need to convert it, or at least I do, for my MP3 player. My MP3 player takes what it is called very seriously, and plays literally only MP3s.

Okay, so that's why we'd spring for the soundtracks then. Massive quality upgrade. I feel pretty okay then. I might even go for the OSTs for that quality upgrade.

I won't speak for Pablo, but, I have musician friends, and I buy a ton of music. Generally, if you purchase music directly, you can store it, back it up, convert it, whatever you want so long as it stays with YOU. You can play it for your friends if they come by your house, but it's generally not cool to give them a copy, for example. Also, listening to a song on YouTube is fine (ideally, it's a copy posted by the band or the label, so that they get paid by the ads from your listen), but recording the song off of that stream is NOT ok. The same applies to Pandora, Spotify, and the like. Also, there aren't many places that sell music with DRM attached anymore, but, if you do happen to buy from one of the few that do, it's also not ok to do anything to the song that removes said DRM.

There are of course, many exceptions that make the rule, but if you follow those guidelines, IMO, you don't have to worry about it.

Depends on what you mean:

http://www.amazon.com/Valley-Without-Wind-Vol/dp/B0079G0N1E/ref=pd_sim_sbs_dmusic_a_1

Those are exactly what I am looking for. Got any for the AI War Expansions? (And these in a downloadable format. Amazon doesn't let me right click save.)

Right-click -> save-image-as works for me on firefox.

Hopefully Chris or Pablo knows.

That gets you the thumbnail version shown on the page, not the full resolution one. :)
