I've played it.

It is by far the smoothest, least laggy pvp game I've had the pleasure of playing. Not once could I even think there was something odd because of lag. I'd of thought I paid something for it due to simply the infrastructure.

Matches just feel remarkably same-y, due in part to their being the same 9 classes throughout ranks, and an incredible amount of grind.
Life is short. Have fun.

I tried it and went back to World of Tanks.

While the gameplay is very different, the leveling concept of grinding to open up new vehicles is the same pretty much.

Yes, it was fun to blast away in a space environment as opposed to the 2D ground environment that WoT has, but that is all I could do.

After the first couple games where I just stuck the throttle at max and chased enemies around, I started slowing down and actually trying to accomplish the level objectives.

I could not. I could not even  find the objectives, I could not keep track of allies, let alone enemies, I could not even tell where I was in relation to the boundaries of the battle.

So ya, while WoT has the limitations of 2D ground, that means it is a slower game that I can actually follow what is going on and so I can actually contribute to my teams efforts.

Having said that, the gameplay itself was fun and it is the smoothest space flying game to come along (that I've noticed) in quite a while. I just found everything else to be clunky and non-intuitive.

Thats actually a really good point, I havent experienced much lag at all.

I am beginning to wonder if everyone's weapons actually auto-aim or something. I feel like I am hitting far more than my aiming/cof should indicate, especially while using lasers. Similarly, I get hit far too much while flying in small ships.

I would definitely agree that their map needs work. Lots of work. They dont really make their objective hud indicators stand out against the backgrounds (which are often dark/red, making enemy objectives hard to see).

I hear that it changes pretty radically once I start doing tier 2 things, so I really want to wait on giving it an actual judgement until then.

Lance, at tier 2 things do become more streamlined in that units get specialties. Two general hull sizes form, frigate and interceptor. Frigates are large, strong, sluggish, and tend for long range (on is a knife fighter though) while the interceptors branch into direct combat or map control (for example cloaking or de facto warping across the map).

The problem is that these branches remain constant the rest of the game. At tier 3 you get equipment which makes another minor layer, but these are seasoning to the ship's primary role. There are maybe 12 maps for each mode, and by tier 3 you've seen them all.
