Airmech
« on: October 08, 2012, 10:55:06 pm »
Yet another game enters the increasingly crowded scene. This one is best defined as an ARTS, as you actually build and control units in addition to your hero.

WTF Is...

I have been playing this a little bit since it was a Google Chrome exclusive. Yes, I did say Google Chrome the web browser. It's on Steam now though.

I've found it intriguing but very different. Not sure what I really think of it.

Mind if I copy over my biggerish post from bay12? It describes it a bit better than that (the post, not the video).

The main thing though is that its still on Chrome (forums say its laggier on chrome), but thers also the windows version and the steam version, though you have to buy one of the bundles to get the steam version during the beta, otherwise it'll be in the F2P section later after beta.

Go right ahead and copy it. (And link your post there so I can follow that thread.)

I actually have it on beta myself without having paid a penny. I got a beta key given to be for some random reason.

I played it alpha :P

...It promptly crashed on my terrible Intel HD graphics chip (Which is not the worst of things, I could play the shogun 2 demo on low among other thinsg, which was rather surprising), and I forgot about it until TB made his video. Apparently I missed the alpha bundle. /sigh

Anyway, here it is (though its apparently the third AirMech thread we've had there >.>)

I've been playing this and having fun, and I didn't see anything about it in the first 4 pages, so I made a thread about it. Anyone else here play it?

AirMech is a game developed by Carbon Games which revolves around the use of your interchangeable aircraft/ground mech to overwhelm and conquer the enemy. The Action part of ARTS comes from the fighting of the other players or AIs either in the air or in ground mech combat, while the RTS part is from producing units, controlling parts of the map by capturing and fortifying bases with units, and using basic commands (Hold Position, Attack Opponent base, Secure nearest capturable base for capturing, Follow unit, and Patrol) to direct the units individually, except for infantry which just move toward bases to capture them.

It is currently free and available for download for Windows, with an alternative of using Chrome (Supposedly the Chrome version is laggier). The Steam version of the beta requires purchasing either the starter bundle or the beta bundle from steam instead of in-game, once its out of beta (if I read on their forums correctly) it'll be part of Steam's F2P section.

I tried to play it while it was a chrome thing. It was .. I dunno how to say it. Pretty bad? I had issues with the pacing. Like.. huge issues. Units were way too fast, heros dealt too much damage..

It felt too much like an arcade game. And i dont really like arcade games :\

Well, it's based on a Mega Drive game, that's practically arcade.

I'm no fan of the way the weapons feel.

I can't locate it within steam client for some reason. I can see it on the steam store in browser but can't find it in the client itself. Weird!

When I type airmech into the search box on the client and hit enter, it pulls up the game, the beta bundle, the starter pack, and the trailer.

I think the alien attack to interfere with the XCOM release is currently shooting up the modules in the search room.

Eitherway, you don't have to use the steam version, currently the only steam-only function is the invite to join game from friends list function.

Uhm, If no one else wants it I'd take (although I have not tired it yet so I'm not sure if I like it in the end) the steam name is andrewsav, choose one in New Zealand.

Cheers.
