Act of Aggression, back to the glory days of RTS

So C&C Red Alert was essentially the first computer game I ever played. It's the game I grew up playing. I was a bigger fan of TA after that came out a few years later, but the C&C series will always have a special place in my heart.

The games in this genre, as of late, have been incredibly awful by anybody's standards. I think the last praised C&C game was Generals, and that's over a decade old now.

So Eugen is making a new game on their beautiful and proprietary Wargame engine, except it won't be the large-scale top down, realistic design, but a closer, more personal C&C feel with 3 unique factions, traditional resource gathering, and of course superweapons. Keep your eye on this one boys.

I like the Wargame series, so this will certainly be interesting. Eugen seem to know what they're doing in the RTS field.
I can already tell this is going to be a roller coaster ride of disappointment.

A throwback to Act of War? Interesting, I'd like to see how this develops.

C&C will always have a warm heart for me. First computer game I really wanted. I used up 75% of my annual allowance to buy tiberium sun because I could not wait 3 weeks for my birthday. Modded it myself (dug into the .ini files and made my own custom AI and everything) and played it with my dad for years. Always have been a mega fan.

The thing I wonder most is about the cut scenes of any single player mode. The C&C series over time was known for having cut-scenes that were borderline campy...yet always enjoyable. Looking back, that was the thing that for me makes them stand out the most. Even today I can watch the C&C cutscenes and feel equal part excitement and comedy.

Yes, it is a real dichotomy the C&C series is for me. On the one hand you hear the cheese that is the cut-scenes. Yet the actual in game missions are coldly serious.

I think the last mission of NOD Tiberium Sun does this fairly well. The first two minutes show a campy version of events, while the 2-3 minute mark provides a cold analysis of what you must do. Most games would provide either a campy version or a serious version of narrative, but C&C provides both elements and neither contradict each other. The fact the mission itself is good is also important, but that last bit is not unique to C&C.

EDIT: Also, I apologize for the voice after these scenes. It wasn't easy to find a clip that showed but the campy cut-scene and the colder mission briefing.

Sadly, in games where America is an option. I find that I can't pick any other faction. Even if they are underpowered.

I actually think C&C generals did a fairly good balance between factions with one being undeniably America. They had the "strongest" units but were very expensive and could easily be overwhelmed by other factions.

I simply loved the ranger's versatility. Although I couldn't help but chuckle every time he would say special forces. Ranger Bat isn't SF.

This actually looks to have a lot in common with Grey Goo, though I guess if both of them are aiming for the C&C Roots, it would.

For example, 3 unique factions, harvester "supply lines", and instead of relying on the old "tiberium fields", both games have now resorted to the new "resource points" style, which forces players to aggressively expand and defend their forward territory instead of hunkering down at the starting position.

Apparently AoA will have "banks" as well, which can only be captured by infantry, effectively another resource to the game and forcing city-type engagements into the mix. Apparently there are several more resources in this game than Grey Goo's one, so in that sense it may be significantly more complicated and/or fun. One definite advantage is that, with Eugen being the developer, we know the graphics will be beautiful.

Anyway, I'm excited to try both of them (maybe I'll get them at the same time). AoA releases this Spring.

"Talking of cash, here’s something neat. Basic infantry might initially seem outmatched by all the high-tech, show-off gear on display, but they do have one unique ability that no other unit has – they can capture prisoners of war. Defeat another squad of troopers, or round up enemy tank crews after you’ve gutted their vehicle, and you can send your captives off to a military prison. Captured prisoners earn you cash, so securing them becomes another valuable revenue stream. You can even outfit you troops with advanced non-lethal weaponry to increase your capture rate. It’s a nice little sub-system to think about that’s not essential, but could just swing the tide of battle in your favour."
