Original: http://arcengames.com/raptor-dev-diary-3-more-audio-and-video/

Oi, Raptor!  Been four business days since we saw you -- what's new?

The short list of new stuff shown in this video:

  1. Improved post-processing visual effects.

  2. Improved raptor skin.

  3. Completely re-rigged and freshly animated raptor.

    1. A couple of glitches there, though, most notably in the walk animation.

  4. Completely new sound system based on SECTR Audio and a bunch of custom stuff.  HDR audio!

  5. Revised sound effects for many things, new sound effects for many things including the raptor, and things like reverb zones.

  6. More stuff is destructible now, and you can see how that actually affects level traversal in some places (much nicer than getting stuck on geometry).

What's next?

  1. More splitting-out of the various assets and prepping them for procedural generation systems.

  2. The first foray into procedural levels with real content.

  3. Custom audio occlusion based on my occlusion culling system.

  4. Custom ambient sounds attached to objects (hissing pipes, etc) based on the SECTR Audio stuff, but distinct from it.

  5. Particle effects!

  6. Better vocalization sounds for the raptor, probably.

  7. Putting all these new things together in the form of actual enemies to fight that use all of these subsystems together.

Other important news?

New Screenshots (click for really detailed versions!):

1. Running With Claws Out

Really looking nice!

The feel I get is a bit like this...without the guns...or blood...or aliens...but the aesthetic I get and the movement in 2D feels similar as well.

https://youtu.be/a-HXZq_8DDs?t=9m15s

What I most felt though as I saw the dinosaur was: I want to sprint fast and tear my enemies to pieces before scurrying away. In other words a movie monster. I doubt it will exactly be that, but that was the first thought in my head.

Have you considered putting some of your altered stuff back up on the asset store? e.g. the custom-built object destruction or ambient occlusion?

Cool. Cross-platform compatible is cool, too, and the Linux users are thankful.

So is this going to be like a puzzle platformer/FPS with claws? :)

is it just or do the not raptors raptors leg look a little to too hmmm what's the word? goofy? in the jumping picture? probably just me but they don't look natural at all.

Oh, cool!  I never saw or played that game.  It's very interesting-looking, though.  I really considered doing this in a first-person fashion rather than third-person.  In a lot of ways it would be way easier to make that way.  But it kept feeling a lot like a human running around in that video you showed -- even the footsteps were bipedal instead of quadrupedal!  That was a bit odd.  They were getting around that some by having other necromorphs visible a lot of the time to help emphasize what you are, but I like the idea of being the lone raptor.

What I most felt though as I saw the dinosaur was: I want to sprint fast and tear my enemies to pieces before scurrying away. In other words a movie monster. I doubt it will exactly be that, but that was the first thought in my head.

That is more or less the idea, yeah. :)

Have you considered putting some of your altered stuff back up on the asset store? e.g. the custom-built object destruction or ambient occlusion?

I've thought about it, but I tend to cross-integrate a lot of my systems.  The destruction stuff is really not something I could resell, because it includes too much stuff from other people.  The rendering occlusion system (not ambient occlusion -- we do have that, but I didn't make one custom) is something that I created from scratch after simply inspecting those of others, so I could sell that freely.  That said, it's built for specific sorts of use cases, and trying to extend it to make it more general-purpose is not something I'd look forward to.  I also wouldn't look forward to lots of people misusing it and then requiring support, etc.  Ultimately the money I could make from the asset store with this seems to pale in comparison to the hassle.

Cool. Cross-platform compatible is cool, too, and the Linux users are thankful.

Indeed. :)

So is this going to be like a puzzle platformer/FPS with claws?

Haha -- not really, no.  I don't really know what to call this!

- It's kind of like a horror game in some respects, except you get to be the monster.
- There are FPS elements, but you're the target and not the one doing the shooting.
- There are definitely a lot of action/adventure pieces to this.
- There is maze exploration and will be other elements along that line with decisions to make, but not puzzles per se.
- Being able to run around and jump is important for combat, and getting to a high platform to take cover and then jump back down (or sneak past, either way) might be important.  But it's not the same as a platformer with jumping puzzles.  None of that!
- There are some stealth ideas here, but not like most stealth games where you have to stay out of enemy vision cones or die, etc.  Just that sneaking around will actually work and is a good idea to do sometimes.

is it just or do the not raptors raptors leg look a little to too hmmm what's the word? goofy? in the jumping picture? probably just me but they don't look natural at all.

Maybe it's the angle of the picture?  I'm not sure.  The animations are being refined still, though.

Uh, yes, rendering occlusion. I'm aware of the difference, my brain just derped.

Really happy to hear I get to play movie monster again. The 3rd person view certainly takes more work but the it is already paying dividends.

Good to hear!  That's been my take on it as well.

I've actually been a bit inspired by Super Mario 3D World in terms of how the raptor is just so fluid to play with.  The forward lunge was definitely inspired by the down-forward strike of Cat Mario.

you know I've been wondering if you'd ever make a full super stealth game Chris? like in invisible ink for instance were your ability to survive at all is dependant on not being in sight even if you cause an alert
a fair deal of people seem to think you should always have the option to go Rambo in stealth games but I tend to find that the Rambo option is usually a giant bore and doesn't feel good at all that and after playing invisible for so I tend to find stealth games a bit to easy now
or like mark of the ninja which while being pretty easy felt amazinggggg!.

ps if you don't want to that's fine to if you feel there's really nothing new you could do with the genera to be interesting or you just don't think you'll ever want I'm just curious really

I'm not sure on a stealth game that was true stealth.  Honestly I hate all the waiting around that winds up happening.  I like being stealthy, but not being forced to just sit there a lot.  Those two things usually conflict, so the level design would have to be pretty clever to avoid that.  Mark of The Ninja was something that I enjoyed some, but didn't play too far in.  Invisible Inc was something on my wishlist, but I have not played it yet.
: Re: Raptor Dev Diary #3: More Audio And Video
: chemical_art May 05, 2016, 07:29:37 PM
My favorite stealth games were those that being alerted was not an instant failure, but instead resulted in escalating response from the enemy. If you were spotted, first it would be a fight to prevent the enemy from calling for help and if that failed then eliminating / hiding from the less dangerous guards before the more dangerous response followed up. You could in theory fight the response force but it was always a steep climb, but on the other hand if you did manage to eliminate it then neighboring areas would be much easier since such a force was already eliminated.

invisible is a bit of an odd duck in the pacing regard since the waiting around that's simply in the nature of stealth games and something I don't think you can remove with it still being a stealth game but the alarm counter on the other hand forces you to be super turn efficient now you can bishy bashy everyone but it might make life harder for you in the long term especially since kos don't last long at all with default bishy bashers
something else I appreciate about it though is that it is actually super challenging unlike usual stealth games which tend not to be really that difficult but rather just designed at making you feel cool
but if you ever do decide to make a super stealth game I would recommend at least playing ink first if nothing else I love that game so much and as much as I like don't starve/mark of the ninja I really think invisible is a way better game and as far as I'm concerned my favourite game from them full stop
I'm almost tempted to call it their masterpiece but considering that there probably going to make more games in the future and that all things considering I don't think they've made THAT many games at all really it would be really silly for me to say that now.

ps to chemical art just automatically failing is silly although I find there's usually a way to cheese it personally I prefer were its pretty much impossible to deal with that extra meat otherwise it sort of kill the gravity of that happening I think invisible perfected that for me due to its one hit death nature and that killing anything is quite difficulty and expensive and will probably make life harder for you in certain ways

The whole response scenario leads to some interesting emergent gameplay.

Even in AI Wars some players try to take every world so they can see just how hard the AI respond.

You and me both, which is why the 3D game of mine (that is currently back-burnered) would operate like that.  And heck, even just getting into line of sight with a camera or guard wouldn't even be sufficient enough for them to call in backup or engage in a firefight.  There's this wonderful thing called disguises that if you're just wandering around looking like 400 other blokes no one's going to bat an eye.  And even if they are searching for you, being mixed in with 400 other blokes means you're hard to recognize in the crowd.

Also, the whole thing takes place in cyberspace, so the standard issue guard is a "dog brain"* robot: they might not even realize that there's an alert!  (Or rather: there's a fire alarm in that room, its in this room, so it's somebody else's problem and it didn't get the memo about your description anyway).

*Its what us chummers call a rating 3 pilot program. It's not very smart, but it at least doesn't require standard actions to direct in a firefight.

that sounds interesting although some of the more deliberately dum ai seems like it could make the game not quite as challenging as id like but still id play a stealth game in cyber space any day.

Choppers can still get you up there, though.  Unfortunately there's no military response (except in that one mission) in that game.

I've discovered that if you ride the train around the city while you're fully loaded with a minigun and rocket launcher and whatnot, you can absolutely wreck the police and maintain 5 stars for a super long time, and then eventually when you run low on ammo just keep riding the train and if you've taken out all the choppers or go into a tunnel, the stars expire.  In the meantime... far more invincible than on a mountain.

If they haven't seen you for long enough, then yeah, no choppers.  I meant mainly if you're up in the mountains where the police won't go, but you're sniping them or something along those lines.

that sounds interesting although some of the more deliberately dum ai seems like it could make the game not quite as challenging as I T'Would like but still I T'Would play a stealth game in cyber space any day.

Its not quite "deliberately dumb," I'm just downplaying it a little. I've got specific mechanics in mind and the goal is for the player to not need to worry about if their foot is sticking out around a corner, but rather worry about bashing keypads or riffling through data stores in the open.

Think of it more like playing a spy in TF2: if you're in amongst players of the other team just right, none of them are going to suspect a thing.  As soon as you stab someone, then everyone in your line of sight will go "spy!" and everyone not in your line of sight will just keep doing what they're doing.

hu so social infiltration stealth then? I know its not an entirely accurate word to use since if your in cyber space your not socially manipulating people but rather systems and so on but that actually sounds really interesting the only other core stealth game I can think of that uses social infiltration is the hit man series.

Well, being a single player game, it's going to be against a scripted system either way.  There's some extra flexibility in suspension of disbelief when systems misbehave though. ;) "Well of course it did that, it's just a dumb robot." :P

Not that all entities will be AI programs, there will be 'human' agents as well, but mostly on Overwatch.  Well, and the fellow non-allied sneaks causing trouble for you too. ;D

Anyway, just because they're AI programs doesn't mean that they can't provide a challenge.  One of the systems I designed was allowing the player to see through walls or around corners (or in other remote ways).  But such vision is imperfect.  See through walls? Sure.  But not everything you see is real: just as you can make the AI not see you, the AI can make you not see it (or create virtual phantoms).

It's the "empty police car on the side of the freeway makes drivers slow down" tactic.

1 I meant as in not usually sneaking but trying but sort of blending and trying not to arose suspicion but sounds like this might have bits of both sounds like I should enjoy it providing your actually letting public people play it when your finished with it of course

2 that sounds like potential for multi player not that I expect that will lead to it but a possibility any way

3 is it going to be using a peaking system of some kind in regards to looking round walls and such? I liked that system in you know what I'm referring to

4 so the ais going to be on a sort of watching state then? presumably in till the player fucks up inevitably and makes shit hit the fan I hope your ais good  other wise people are going to find a way to cheese it even though that tends to be half the purpose of a stealth game its not really to good if you want it to be challenging in the long term.

Not for a long while.  It's no where near a state that people can "play" it.

Hah, sort of, but I'm not set up to do a networked game. I just intend to have agents that are also doing what you're doing, but with different goals, who might (cough, will) trip alarms and make certain areas more dangerous to pass through.  Yeah, maybe they aren't looking for you, but security levels will be on alert for any suspicious activity.

is it going to be using a peaking system of some kind in regards to looking round walls and such? I liked that system in you know what I'm referring to

No, but yes.  There's at least 3 ways I envision being able to observe enemies outside your direct line of sight, one of which is a literal wall-hack: you see enemy outlines through walls (http://s28.postimg.org/6wf3ks1pp/edge_highlight.png) (screenshot is just a demo scene to verify that the visual effects work the way I wanted).  Another is via remote camera, e.g. there's a camera over there rendering its view over here for me to see, ah la Portal or CCTV.

There's a tiered system involved.  Guard patrols room / overseer watching through cameras / etc.  Each one will have its own weaknesses in terms of how to get by, but Stealth games are at heart puzzle games, albeit with less strict penalties for failure.  And in my case, going in guns blazing and shooting everything in sight should be a valid (although dangerous) option.

1 yea fair enough like I said when you do decide to release how ever it is you intend to do that

2 I never expected you to actually have multiplayer elements (from what I've heard that sort of thing can be quite expensive to do) but the ground work is there for sure in having those other sneakers be players and if you wanted to go even further than that you could have the security systems be all controlled by a player as well just to make it more interesting

3 neato

4 sigh I wish stealth games wouldn't do that and just focus on making the stealth mechanics stronger personally I find when they have combat in that's its either to easy/dull and not very interesting BUT if that's how you want it to be I'm not going to try and sandbag you there ill just be doing my usual thing treating being detected as a failure state and restarting.

Oh I get it. This is all about stealth, but I'm a fan of being able to shoot my way through problems if I want/need to.  I've even got the weapons designed in such a way that they can benefit the stealth stuff. e.g. blinding a robot so its vision range is nil.

o really? now that I can get behind heck you can shoot your way through problems in invisible if you think its a good idea at the time heck having more utility in their guns that wasn't for assassinating guards would nice know that I think about like something they could sell in enough thingy of downloadable content
btw if weapons will have uses for stealth then ill be happy not to ignore them entirely in my try hard way of stealth gaming.

I shall.

Will this dinosaur eat?

Possibly!  I really liked how you could eat the compys in the 1993 JP game.  I've thought that something similar in this area might work well for health gains in here.  That said, I'm uncertain if there will be health at all, and there's also animation cost concerns with the eating (though mixing animations plus dynamic IK helps a lot with that).

TLDR... maybe?

god that video actually disturbed me particularly the fact that the man just laughs and I have to ask why they let a baby rabbit out in the open like that?! seriously he/she should have been in a run (granted I've never kept baby rabbits BUT I have kept baby chickens and I think what applies  with them should apply with baby rabbits if not more so since baby chickens aren't likely to sprint of for the hell of it) it just seems like basic logic to me.

edit wait was that a wild rabbit they were releasing into the wild? if so it makes them a little less dumb although in that case i don't know why they were releasing him/her into a suburban neighbourhood hood were him/her could get run over

 :-[ :-[ :-[  Sorry, I put up a warning now.

particularly the fact that the man just laughs

I think I would have had the same reaction.  To me his voice had that kind of "oh man stuff is hitting the fan and I have no way to stop it" kind of giddy quality to it.  I didn't think he found it actually funny at all, personally, but more like "this day has gone from bad to worse super fast."

I think that what they did was right, if that was indeed the mother rabbit.  That baby was old enough to be out of the nest in the first place, and in those sorts of areas it is likely that the nest was super close if the adult rabbit was right there.  I've been around rabbits my whole life in environments like this, and they look after their own even if not related (food scarcity aside).  I have some interesting stories about a rabbit giving birth and others trying to distract us from it, but that's for another time

Anyway.

Right.  And an adult rabbit was right there, which was why.  Mostly likely they figured out where the nest was to some extent, and most likely the mother had been kind of stalking their house for a bit.  Earlier in the video they said they'd had it and been feeding it for a week.  I'm not sure what happened that it got separated in the first place.  Rabbits almost never get hit by cars in a neighborhood like that, though -- squirrels are the ones that happens to.  But generally people try to avoid hitting any of those animals.  Squirrels are ones that dash back and forth indecisively, though.

yea yea okay sorry  about I had what people seem to call a nee jerk reaction at first I assumed it wasn't a wild rabbit and then it occurred to me that if my time doing volunteer work for the mspca is anything to go by that plain brown rabbits don't really exist unless there from the wild I think I missed the part about it having a ma waiting for it so yea that's the only reason I got disturbed because I thought they were being incompetent or sinister
but if what is said is true then well that sort of thing just happens really I love all animals and that hawk needs to eat.

Seen it before.
Discussion reminds me that my dad freaked the hug out when he was driving his big honking tractor around to spread a big pile of leaves out and found baby bunnies.  He was worried he hurt them and didn't know what to do, so he called Mom and I to figure it out (we picked them up and relocated them to the other side of a fence).

I'm pretty jaded about wild animal death at this point, a prior dog we kept score between him and the ground hogs.

I live in Washington and in my area there is a Bald Eagle that flies around. I am damn certain at one point in time, he took one of the Chickens as all I saw the next day was a ton of chicken feathers and one Iconic Bald eagle feather, but no birds to speak of :P

It's really something to watch them dive the lake and fly off with a fish or bunnies from the fields.

Yep, exactly my feelings on "the hawk has to eat."  Seeing people take masochistic joy in something is a whole other matter, for sure, though.  When I was a kid, my cat killed all the rabbits and squirrels around my parents' house.  Took a good 5+ years for the population to really recover after him.

The funniest story I have about that cat (he's been dead over 10 years now, was 14 years old when he died) was one time I came home from school and saw him sitting in the yard in a strange way.  He normally would come greet me, but when I called him he just wouldn't move.  When I approached him he just kept sitting there -- perfectly erect and upright, very regal and a little... smug?

Then I see that there's this little vole (kind of like a mouse) running in literal circles around him.  Took me a second to realize that he was sitting on the lovably vole's hole, haha.  So the vole just had no idea what to do to get home.  I'm sure he was dinner shortly after.

Cats are really heinous when it comes to playing with it's prey, Most the kills they make are purely for enjoyment (like messing with a mouse and his hole!) I get a rather funny giggle when people tell me cats are the greatest pets. So you like animals that murder for pure enjoyment? HAHA

sigh it bothers that cats hunt birds and so on when they don't need to (yes I know instinct and so on which is why I blame the people who breed cats to be what they are) but I hate the idea of birds and so on dying for nothing not that I get upset about it though since most cats I see have the bell collar which I assume at least makes succeeding impossible.

ps I'm referring to house cats there not wild/stray cats

pps I have to admit that is rather amusing personally I would have pushed the cat out of the way but I'm really to kind when it comes to animals for my own good really

I really only care for indoor cats now.  I knew that vole had no hope, and actually they are quite a pest and eat the roots of bushes and kill them, so I didn't feel too bad.  I would have saved a rabbit (and in fact did a few times -- that and possums).  But he could eat voles all day as far as I'm concerned. ;)

It all humans fault as to why Most house cats are like that! We purposely bred them for years and kept Cats that hunted small animals extremely well. So instinctually these days most domesticated cats have an over bred desire to kill for sport! It's what we humans wanted them to be good at in the first place, now they are the best of the entire animal Kingdom when it comes to killing!

actually its the whole enjoyment part that doesn't make much séance to me that really isn't natural at all unless it was a by product of what you just mentioned. (which it probably is now that you mention it)

I think mostly what happens is that cats get the urge to go hunting, do so, then realize after [whatever] is dead that "yuck, I've got better stuff back home."

Of course, they still play with their prey which is pretty cruel.

It is exactly why! It all genetics, we bred cats to hunt. It's the same reason as to why Bloodhounds have the best nose of all dogs, or why Chickens don't fly. We did that, we bred them to be that way.

Speaking of genetics, this game is probably the best game I ever played to represent how it works. You can actively breed Roosters for fighting purposes all while breeding for specific genetic traits, both mental and physical! Like ones that are good at pouncing, or cast spells faster, or just to get cool colors or plumage.

Linkrealms https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wpvv8jPX-g&ab_channel=minecraftwb (involves Cocks fighting!)

That what this game needs Chris, Selectively breeding Raptors to increase your ability to kill more enemies in the game. It fit perfectly into the Jurassic Park vibe, I'd pay for a Raptor Breeding Simulator with actual Genetics as a main mechanic for the purpose of making the most efficient killer ;)

Totally not serious btw.... or am I? EDIT: Or screw feathered Raptors, add some Cat-Raptors!

perhaps chris could a rogue legacy ish like system were after finding female raptors in heat and doing you know what after dying you could get a choice of different osspring with different stats and so on and then by choosing the one you like the most you could do you know what again and you'd have a good 50 percent chance that at least one factor of this osspring would stay on to the next generation.
