Terraria, a better Minecraft?
« on: May 17, 2011, 12:23:14 pm »
Minecraft was such an awesome idea (I know it's not the first of such games, but it's the first I saw) that I had to buy it, but after 2 weeks I had my fill and returned to more challenging games.

Now I see this new game called Terraria and it looks interesting, very similar to Minecraft but looks to offer a more refined experience and probably more challenging.  I say "more refined" mainly because I'm guessing you can at least play Terraria without using a Wiki.  In Minecraft if you just start to play, you'll probably end up digging rocks out with your hands and never learn to make even a work bench.

The Minecraft community seemed filled with little kids, not too intelligent.  It only takes a few, once 10% of the community is incapable of making posts longer than a sentence, any worth while discussion gets pushed aside.  Especially in contrast to communities like Arcen has built.  Hopefully Terraria doesn't suffer from the same inept community, but it's not looking good from my initial peruse of their forum.

Any one played this game?  What did you think?

I'll start off by saying that it's not fair to compare terraria and minecraft because they are inherently different games with different genres.
Minecraft is more like a sandbox creation game with combat tacked on, while terraria seems more like an rpg style game with sandbox creation tacked on.

While terraria isn't a bad game, it just feels that there's not enough there to make an excellent experience.  The fact that the load times for each world are horrendous doesn't help either.

Terraria will likely not be as popular as minecraft, and therefore, the community won't be as ... juvenile.  Generally, any game that attracts little kids or has a large enough audience has a terrible community.  It's unavoidable, no matter what happens, if you attract enough people, there will undoubtedly be a large number of "idiots" who ruin things for everyone.

Not enough content you say?  Well, the game is 10$, so I still might check it out.

It kind of reminds me of Castlevania, Symphony of the Night, which is one of my all time favorites.  Only with "build your own castle" tacked on.

I've enjoyed the game for the 5 hrs I've put into it so far. Also, the game is in a beta phase right now so it isn't finished and the developer is going to be adding on new content for free, so it will get bigger. The load times are rather painful though, hopefully they will be able to reduce them as time goes on.
