Tip of the Day or.. Why didn't I think of that?!
« on: October 11, 2013, 09:43:31 am »
Inspired by the Tip of the Day thread from AI War ( http://www.arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,7289.0.html )

I think it would be a useful thread to browse, and perhaps the best ones could even be edited and work themselves into the game itself. Perhaps  the game could even give the player a random tip after each mission. Something like a loading screen tip, but in a manner that doesn't only benefit people with slow computers.

In any case, please contribute, and don't worry if something seems "too obvious". Sometimes something that seems obvious to you might make another player facepalm for not realizing that was possible.

I'll start with an example:

- The virus ability is not only useful for disabling bots, but can also be used to get a buff that bot provides to your exos.

Speaking of viruses:

- Try to use viruses on ShieldBots when you can.  As long as you are close enough to a virused ShieldBot, you are invincible, with the damage you take going to the ShieldBot instead.  But get back to safety before it's health runs out.

- While you can use viruses on bosses, it may not be a good idea to do so:  the virused boss will immediately charge at (and fire at) it's former allies, setting off waves of bots... and possibly more bosses as well... yet will likely not do much damage as the enemy focus-fires it to death quickly.

- If there are PantherBots around, and you have an Exo with high trap-skill (which you should, always), try to use the whistle to pull it away from it's friends, by itself.  Pull it as far back as you possibly can.... it'll leave a nice, long path of mines behind it that you can then lure other enemies into, saving you ammo and doing big damage to dangerous targets.  Even better, this is risk-free, as PantherBots can do no direct damage unless you are super close to them.  You can even lure it back onto some of it's own mines (which it will also replace with each step) to take it out without firing at it.

- When there are computer terminals in the mission that still have their effects hidden, never ever ever try to activate them during the mission.  Always wait until you've cleared the mission of bots, and THEN go back and activate them, so their effects are recorded, which means less mystery terminals later on.

- Conserve your ammo.  Assuming you will not take any permanent damage from doing so, always use your weakest possible weapon to kill enemies.  Virus tough bots (or bots with nasty on-death effects, like the EMP Bot), and make enemies killed them.  Do not waste strong attacks on enemies without ammo--they will shut down on their own, and you can kill them at your own pace (for credits).  Sentry Turrets, Mines, and Overload are also excellent ways to save ammunition.

- Learn to use Sentries and Mines, and they will serve you well.  Always have one bot with high Trap-Skill (usually Science) to make the best use of these.  In general, Sentries are great against a lot of weaker bots, and mines are best against individual strong bots.

- Always check the trap skill of the current bot before you step on a mine.  Tripwires and Electric Floors are survivable, but mines will tear apart an Exo later in the game.

- Regen is an amazing tank stat, provided you take cover.  If a bot cannot see you, it cannot shoot you.  If you've taken a hit, and need to regen a bit, hold Ctrl while mousing over the enemy.  You may be able to duck out of range for one turn, which is all you need to get a tick of regen.

- Use the environment to your advantage!  Fuel tanks and explosive runes can clear out a lot of enemies if attacked at the right time.

- If you can avoid it, do not move into range of an alerted enemy.  Doing so gives them a free shot.  Make them move into YOUR range, and you get the free shot.  Or, use stealth to close the gap.

- If it looks like a shot will kill a bot, but the number is close, double-check your damage value vs their shields.  It is very easy to miss the small sliver of red that shows up on their HP bar if you would get them down to only a few HP, and the results can be painful.

Here are some simple ones. The first inspired from a recent discussion:
 - Ground attacks (shift-right click) can be used to destroy friendly mines and sentry turrets, which is useful if they are blocking you.

 - Attacking the ground with your AoE weapon may allow you to hit more bots at a time than attacking a bot directly.

 - The ninja is immune to AoE, use him if you need to blow up barrels at close range.

 - Do not put all your eggs in one basket, it can be useful to put a few hacking points on all exos in case your main hacker dies in a mission.

 - Whistle range is based on an exos sensor range. If your exos have different sensor ranges, swap to the one with the range you want to alert before whistling.

 - Mission rewards are based on the number of surviving exos. It may be worth finishing a mission early instead of hunting down every bot if cannot safely clean up.

 - Changing your weapon does not take any time. Changing your exo uses a turn.

 - Make sure you are facing the correct direction before putting down a mine or a sentry turret.

Also, spreading out hacking points allows your other Exo to hack beneficial terminals, like ammo refill or bot beserk.

One more:  when trying out an unknown terminal during a mission (which, as Misery indicated, is risky), always use the Exo with the LEAST sensor range.  The last thing you want to do is have your Science out and give every single enemy bot in a mission invisibility.

- You can mouse over fuel tanks and the like to see their explosion range, just like the attack range for bots.

- Click on an exo's icon in the sidebar to see its full customisation menu (though you can't make changes).

- Blowing up adjacent missions by completing a fuel depot mission does not give you their benefits (even if it logically should, as with Lion's Den and Assassination). Rather, it just gets them out of the way so as to facilitate access to the missions behind them.

- If you really want epic exos, consider choosing Axis as your pilot rather than Genji. Her expanded choice of missions will allow you to reveal the map and find the Bahamut missions much faster than any of the other four, and will provide a constant benefit for the entire campaign, unlike Genji's one-off bonus.

- A good heuristic for choosing missions: first, choose missions which will give you the biggest advantage (e.g. reactor missions if you're low on power, or hostage rescue missions if you want general loot and have lots of AoE). Second, choose missions with other missions you want hidden behind them. Third, choose missions which will reveal the most new terrain in the city (and thus the most new potential missions).

- It is often more efficient to stack stealth actions on a Ninja, and have other exos use a single stealth action to switch to the Ninja until they are needed (e.g. for virus use) than to attempt to spread stealth action bonuses evenly across your squad. That said, as with hacking, you don't want the entire burden of a given function to fall on one exo.

- When revealing a new area, always take the time to read the effects of any known terminals. Their bonuses, if skilfully exploited, can sometimes trivialise an entire mission.

- Having one exo with highly stacked sensor range (typically a Science exo) not only lets you scout vast distances ahead, but can be combined devastatingly with terminals that target every bot in sensor range, such as by removing the attack of every bot on the level.

- StealthBots attacking you from stealth will decloak if you spend a few turns being stealthed yourself, allowing you to take them out. Also, if you saw them cloak and know where they are, or worked it out some other way, you can attack them by targeting the ground there.

- EMPBots will attempt to get as close to you as possible, but they cannot attack. Nor will other bots treat them as targets (at least, more than they would another bot). As such, you can afford to take them out last if they're not blocking your way.

- Additionally, while exploding EMPBots disable other bots' weapons and movement, they only disable your weapons. In a pinch, blow up an EMPBot to give yourself a chance to put some distance between you and the enemy (just as long as doing so doesn't alert other enemies along your escape route).

- Traps trigger when you step onto them, but not when you stay there. It is perfectly safe to step onto a mine with an exo that has high trap skill, then immediately switch to one that has no trap skill at all.

- If you can't get sufficient trap skill, or if your trap skill exo is dead, high regen is the next best thing. A high regen exo is capable of navigating electric floors without permanent damage (though late enough in the game, mines will be too powerful).

- You can shoot mines to get rid of them, though doing so will take an increasingly unreasonable amount of ammo as the game progresses.

- Don't forget that the cryopods in hostage rescue missions ignore splash damage. Bring lots of ammo for your AoE weapons, and try to clear rooms with cryopods before the bots have a chance to attack them.

- In destruction missions, use your whistle and exploit the fact that bots will happily take the shortest path to you even if it involves demolishing cover. When the cover is explosive, this can lead to clearing out entire rooms without firing a single shot.

- All else being equal, use the exo with the highest trap skill for general moving around, occasionally switching in the highest sensor range exo for a turn to extend your map (unless you're worried about HunterBots). This will save you from both tripwires and disastrous mine-related accidents.

- Use an exo with high stealth to open doors so you can hide instantly if you don't like what's on the other side. You will, more than once, open a door to find several bots ready to fire on you, and you won't always be able to solve the problem with urgent backpedaling pr AoE damage.

- It is impossible to accidentally destroy a mission objective you're supposed to capture. Fire those rocket launchers all you like.

- The total number of items in the store doesn't vary (much), so every item you put on layaway reduces the number of new items the store will offer you in subsequent days (until you take it off again). Use this feature sparingly, for items with truly outstanding stats and/or ones you intend to buy the instant you can afford them.

Good list.

- Additionally, while exploding EMPBots disable other bots' weapons and movement, they only disable your weapons. In a pinch, blow up an EMPBot to give yourself a chance to put some distance between you and the enemy (just as long as doing so doesn't alert other enemies along your escape route).
Along with this point,
-  EMPBots only disable your currently deployed Exo's weapons.  Popping an EMPBot then switching to another Exo can give you three turns of no-counterattack combat.
-  Only the Exo that is deployed will regenerate shields or recover from EMP blasts.

And boy, isn't it wierd to type and read things like "powerful Exo" and be happy about it.

-Damage Reduction affects Overload.  100 Overload rating does 25 damage do you, and 10 Damage Reduction lowers that to 15.  Enough Overload, Damage Reduction and a tiny amount of regen gives you an unlimited weapon.

-You can hack fuel barrels [bug?] for 5 Virus points (I'm guessing base 6, but they're level 0).  A hacked barrel will not be attacked by sentries and will draw the ire of enemy bots.

-You can assign a key to skip Bot animations, you can hold this key while moving even

-A single explosive rune adds nothing, if you stand on it and blow yourself up you'll only take damage once.

-Game animation speed can be increased in the menu, enemy line of sight and floating combat text can also be enabled

-You can press H to recenter the camera

- ClawBots got you down? Try to put a Virus in them!  If you manage to get 2 of them on your side, that Assassination mission can become very interesting ;)

-Game animation speed can be increased in the menu ...

This 100x, it makes moving around so much faster. Beware of setting it too high or you can end up moving two or three spaces at a time inadvertently.

- Always sell items you are 50% sure you'll not ever have need for it (yea that's enough), except maybe some spare reactors in case you run out of juice when installing mighty upgrades. This way, customization works much faster after a mission.

- After a mission, first archive all items that MIGHT be useful, then go to the store and sell the rest. Now, bring them back and start tweaking. When you're done, see above. Takem note that it might be wise to keep some parts if you are about to do a mission for an epic exo.

- Some tip on the meta-level of gaming: stick to the style you play - hardcore or softcore? If you mess up on softcore, try not to mess yourself up over it and just reload, you chose the possibility to do so, so use it. If on ironman, try to learn enjoying a permanent loss and the RELAXATION you feel for not having a choice to reload. You'll have to cope with it, that makes the choice alot easier ;) You really should avoid misclicks though. Really.

- On the strategical map, don't do several missions at once hunting for one certain item type. If you are unlucky, you might have used them all up before late game and have no easy way to hunt high level loot of a specific item type.

- Related to a tip above: I myself don't stealth with an high stealth exo after opening a door and facing several dangerous bots, I enable stealth even just before opening a door. This way, you don't alert them bots and might choose to enter the room from a different entrance or avoid it altogether. Once you made enemies aware of you, they'll follow you after decloaking. And related to that, destroy false walls with a high range exo or even around the corner with an AOE attack, because if you are within range of a bot after shooting down a barrier, it and all the others within range get a free shot. I wrecked an exo on normal early in the game this way, so this is much more relevant on higher difficulties.

It gets a little annoying when you try to rotate it on top of an enemy bot though, as the range overlay is overriden by the "show enemy range" key.

Yeah thats true, but fortunately the mechanic still works.
