This may be a weird question, but...
« on: August 15, 2014, 01:18:02 am »
I always asked myself where the intended face (or head) of the Exos is supposed to be - in terms of the art used in customization, I mean.

Sometimes it looks like the Exo is supposed to have its face in the chest (like e.g. with the Assault, Science and Brawler Exos, similar to how Space Marine Dreadnoughts are designed in 40K) and sometimes the little thing on the top looks like its supposed to be a head (like with the Ninja Exos) ???.

I am asking this because I plan to try to make some snapshot of the Exos faces/heads for the achievement icons I want to try (next week).
Any chance to get a word on this from the artist (I think it was Cath?) :)?

Not a high priority request, but I always wondered, you know...

For the most part they were intended to be only vaguely anthropomorphic.  Aka, they have arms because arms are useful, but they don't have legs because hover jets are more useful.  They have eyes on them because binocular vision is useful, but they don't have a head with a brain in it because keeping your CPU buried deep inside is way more useful.

So they don't really have "heads" per se, they just have eyes at various menacing parts on their bodies or upper guns or whatnot. :)

Agreed with Chris that they don't really have heads and faces per say, it is more where our human brains pick up mechanics that makes it look like a face. This is also the way I painted them, I did not have a fixed area for a "face" but I strived to get the faces in roughly the same area at least which means I made them all to be on the front and/or slightly under the hull. The top parts of the Brawler and Ninja does look like faces too but while painting them those areas was not where I put the "eyes" (lamps or bright lights) My interpretation of their faces is under the hull where you got the so called eyes. (Green on Ninja and blue on Brawler )

If you're doing your icons from their faces though I would definitely go with the part that most people will recognize as their faces, so for those two the top is still your better option since the underside is pretty dark and their intended faces are so far inside the hull.

Hope this helps!  :)

I forgot that the concept artist hadn't drawn the eyes!  I was thinking that was already on there, but you had to interpret that yourself and make them up.  I totally forgot!  Anyway, I always loved how they turned out. :)
