(Crossposted from this blog post)

This one makes a number of improvements, such as:

Bot Rebalancing
The details are in the notes above, but basically each bot type now has a "Pain/Irritation/Traumatization Assessment Rating", or PITAR for short.  This is used to better regulate the relative frequency of bot types (in a normal mission) and presence and quantity in the end-game bot-army.  Several stat changes have also been made, notably reducing the health of several high-health normal bots.

Please let us know how the balance is feeling, as it's certainly an ongoing process.

Who Designed This Circuit?
This is another new "conduct" option for starting a new game, and it multiplies the power cost of all exo parts by 3.  In the past some players have expressed an interest in having more of an opportunity cost for using higher-level parts, so here you go.

Naming Exos
Now each of your exos has a unique name.  They're initially just descriptive ("Siege", "Siege #2", etc) but you can change the name of an exo on its customization screen.  Do with that what you will.

There are also several other UI improvements, like the ability to tag missions on the city map for your future reference.

Enjoy!

This is a beta update delivered through the in-game updater, if you already have 1.008 or later. When you launch the game, you'll see the notice of the update having been found if you're connected to the Internet at the time.

Cool stuff! I thought you would go ahead and change the stats of a bot or two. Lucky me that I was wrong ;)...

EDIT: I started a fresh game on Expert using 1.011 and so far have encountered no outliers. Balance feels fairly good both in terms of in-mission bot composition and the setup of the final army. I am only at day 3, though.

I will report back once I get further into the campaign, might take me until the weekend to get to playing again, though...

I'm enjoying the custom names too.

Sure my names are kinda random, but Robert, James, Allison, and Mia are far cooler than 4 nameless siege exos could ever hope to be.

Robert is my scanner/shieldbro
James is my stealth and trap expert (as much as a siege exo can be :P)
Allison is my hacker/backup scanner
and Mia is my heavy hitter

Even though it is "technically" the same as before, it's way more fun having that tiny bit of personality on the exos.

However, I am noticing slight hitches with every step. It's probably because my processor throttles down to 800-2200 mhz during gameplay (since it's not all that demanding). It's not TOO too bad, but it's noticable for me and slightly annoying.

I've also noticed the UI in both bionic and tidalis seem to be a bit more sluggish, Tidalis in particular has a super delay of 2+ seconds whenever I click something in the story mode map, or the game loads back to the map. I don't remember that being there before the last update, but who knows.

Also, what does left clicking do in bionic? I was trying to shoot stuff with left click for a while wondering why it wasn't doing anything before I finally right clicked. Of course, that took all of 30 seconds to adjust to, but it seemed a bit weird for some reason.

So far, my run is going much smoother than my last, which ran afoul of several silly 30+ doombot missions. Glad to hear those should be gone.

ps. Forgot to mention TLF, which I also enjoyed a lot :)

When I get back to my home computer I'm starting a game with bots named Chris, Keith, Josh, and Pablo. If only I could have more than 4 bots to round out the set.

I was originally going to do Khorne, Slaanesh, Tzeentch, and Nurgle, but this way just seems so much more exciting.
I can already tell this is going to be a roller coaster ride of disappointment.

I did have this suspicion that allowing player-edited names was a bad idea ;)

I think if you did that, the corporate overlords would just press the "Exterminatus" button on day one, rather than waiting for you to lose.

Well, as mentioned in the bot balance thread, I'm surprised to see this.  With the focus on TLF and whatever is going on with AI War I'd thought there was only gonna be like, that one update for this game, and that'd be it.

....but you're still adding more cool stuff.  Alot of new things to mess with here so far.

I'm curious, what are your plans going forward with this game?  Of the games you guys have done so far, aside from AI War and TLF, this one has always seemed to me to be the one that has the most potential for general expanding, as I think the overall structure and mechanics are quite well set up to really allow for that sort of thing.    I'd love to see something like, say, enemy presence on the city map;  some sort of (probably loopy) overall AI that appears there, roaming around as you do, corrupting stuff and causing general trouble.

And I like the "conduct" ideas with these; that's a great sort of difficulty-related setting in a more customizable way, I think it's a good idea.  I dont suppose TLF might get something like that at some point?  It seems like it'd REALLY fit that one in particular, to have that sort of really customizable difficulty stuffs.

As Chris said elsewhere, Arcen itself is basically done with non-bugfix work on Bionic.  This is just me working on it in my hobby-programming time.  Same as most of the non-expansion work on AIW (except that's not getting tons of time right now because it's just polishing up for the official 8.0 release and the idea is to fix more than I break).

Like with AIW, Bionic won't get updates year-round, but it is my intent to have at least semi-regular updates (like every other week, or once a month) most of each year.  And right now I'm targeting weekly-ish because... well, let's be honest, there's a fair bit about this game that needs attention.  Still lots of fun, but there's some stuff that holds it back.

As for the nature of the work, I'm mainly focusing on refinement rather than expansion.  There's some expansion like the addition of the conducts, but since I'm not an artist that basically means no significant new art (new exo graphics, new bot graphics, new weapon graphics, new commander graphics, etc).  I could do recolors of stuff to some extent if we really needed more bot types but right now I think it's more important to get the existing bot types to not randomly generate apparently-unwinnable (or nearly so) situations due to total health on the board, etc.

The actual things worked on, and what specifically is done about them, will depend mostly on player feedback.  Though I may do a fair bit on an alternate-customization system I've been thinking about, as honestly I don't have the mental energy to play a serious game of Bionic due to the sheer number of inventory choices between each mission.  And I'm the one who designed and implemented the customization system pretty much 100% on my own :)

Yea, that's really interesting to me too, and I have at least one idea I'll try out soon there.  But it won't really be an AI doing stuff there at this stage.  I'd like to go there some day, but I want to get what's already in the game to a better state first before messing much with the core formula.

TLF is in Chris's court right now, I probably won't have much to do with it (aside from a couple hours a week if Chris asks for it) until the second expansion.  So feel free to ask him for those :)  Iirc it has the same underlying conducts system as Bionic so it's easy to add new ones.

Glad to see you're still interested in Bionic :)
