No mod support?
« on: October 22, 2013, 10:59:02 pm »
First of I love this game...great job Arcen!

But I was surprised to find no apparent mod support or easy way to modify the game files?  Or did I just miss something when I went poking around.  I'd love to get into the files and tweak a few things just for fun - it seems like this game is just begging to be tinkered with

As with our other titles we don't really have mod support outside the graphics and music, etc.

In this one's case we could get away with it easier since there's no multiplayer, but "no multiplayer" is not actually in stone.  The main thing is coming up with a model that players would actually find satisfying.

The other big issue is that we aren't done with the game, and while I'm fairly meticulous at maintaining save compatibility and such, it would take a _ton_ of extra work to maintain backwards compatibility with previous mods when doing an update, which would generally mean smaller and fewer updates.  Given that I'm struggling to even do one update a week at this point (related to a certain five-week-old, I'm sure) I don't think that's a good way to go.  And the alternative is potentially all mods breaking every few days if I actually have some spare time to implement some of my more nefarious schemes work on the game.  Which doesn't sound like it would be very pleasant for the modders :)

That said, what specifically would you want to mod?

all your reasons make perfect sense and I'm enjoying the game regardless.  I've always been one of those players that after I've beaten a game a few times I like to get into the data files and muck around - it really extends the playing experience.

Things that would be fun to tweak around with and easy to do if they were stored in xml files that the game sucked in at runtime would include:
- difficulty settings (I see a run time spreadsheet that gets generated but it looks like that's just for display) - so you could fine tune the difficulty if you wanted amongst the sub settings
- tweaking the EXO configs (not sure if your inventory display is hardcoded or not though) where you can add or remove an extra computer slot or move a gun from one EXO to another etc.
