Game Breaking Issue (Screen won't stay still)
« on: October 08, 2013, 02:46:22 pm »
I just brought the game on Steam. I installed it and tried to run once. It turned blank and I had to ctrl + alt + del to get out. Even the error message window would not show up. I don't know if this would cause the issue I am having now.

I run it a second time. No issue whatever on start up. At the main menu everything seem to be working fine. As soon the screen can be moved with wasd keys. It will always roll in a single direction forever. So as soon I start a mission I lose the sight of where my exo are and I can't move it back. Same problem on the city map it will always stay locked on the top left corner as soon I zoom in.

As a result it is almost unplayable at the moment.

Sorry to hear about the troubles.  Sounds potentially related to the position of the mouse cursor or to keys getting "stuck" input-wise.

Please try:

Main menu -> settings -> Extras tab -> disable the two "edge panning" toggles

Does that help?

Also, quite often when someone reports something like this with a game, they have a gamepad attached which is sitting upside down and thus has a thumb stick mashed down. Or when they started their computer a thumb stick was in a bad position and it calibrated wrong. Unplugging and re-plugging any gamepads also can help.

Nope. Still panning in the same direction. Hmm I just had a thought.

I have a third party software for my mouse. Would turning that off help perhaps? No gamepad here, I do have a joystick but it is currently unplugged and stashed away.

It could be, on the mouse. But if edge panning is off, there should be no way the mouse would be involved.

In the controls settings, you might try rebinding the keys for panning the view. You might also try tapping the arrow keys to see if one is stuck. Something is giving you some rather strange input, it sounds like. What OS are you on?

Well this is interesting. When I press wasd after rebinding. The panning do not respond in any way at all.

When I press right arrow the panning respond by moving to the right but still doesn't respond to up/down arrows.

OS is Window 7 64 bit.

Hmm I just had that error I got when I first run Bionic Dues yet again. I can't bring the error window up. However in task manager I can see the title says "Fatal error in gc".

I'm a bit confused from the description.

That said, pan and move are two different actions. Move is by default wasd. Pan is by default the arrow keys. If you bind both to the overlapping bindings you may get oddness.

If you are getting a fatal error in the gc, that is incredibly strange and sounds like a bad install. Happens from time to time with steam. I suggest doing a verify on your local files for the game (it's under properties when you right click the game in steam). If some file is corrupt, that will fix it.

I already tried verify and it said all files are valid.

Yeah definitely an issue with panning not move sorry for that confusion.  I guess I am too used to having wasd maped to panning in other games.

Hmm. You might try shifting the panning to some other keys over than the arrow keys, in case there is something sending strange signals to your arrow keys. I'm not sure what that would be, but that's really the only thing I can think of at this point. It's a very unique issue to say the least.

I am beginning to think the issue is not unique to just Bionic Dues.

I tried other games by Arcen and so far the issue cropped up in A Valley Without Wind (Not 2 and moving on world map not panning southwest instead of northwest). Northwest panning in shattered haven. Northwest panning in skyward collapse. But it doesn't show up at all in AI War: Fleet Command which make this all the more puzzling to me.

I'm not surprised, as all use the unity 3d engine. Why it would not happen in ai war is a mystery to me. There is definitely something external to the games causing this, but I don't know what it would be -- some sort of software that impacts keys or mice or gamepads. I've gone through all the cases of such things that we've run into in the past -- usually it's the gamepad thing. I'm honestly not really sure what to tell you. You might try disabling that mouse program temporarily, or thinking if there is something else around. 500k copies of these games sold collectively, and this is the first report that wasn't solved by the solutions already suggested, so there is something very unique here.

Sometimes things like the office extensions for Asian characters can cause oddities with the unity 3d engine. Anything like that enabled?

I don't have anything like that. I will try disabling it soon. I already tried rebooting. Perhaps I could try reinstall only the Unity 3d Engine (not the full game but common component between all arcan games). Any suggestion toward reinstall unity 3d engine? If that make sense?

There is no common component on he hard drive between all the games; each game is its own self contained set of files. There are no outside dependencies, in other words.

From the sound of it, I would advise:
- unbinding the gamepad axes from the panning functions.
- rebinding the panning functions to some other keypad keys if it persists.

I did forget to mention that if you have a keyboard or similar with an extra trackball, that could be being detected as a gamepad axis I imagine. That would be a first, but it is plausible.

Well it is the first time I experienced the issue in other games and I have used the same keyboard/mouse for a while now (little over a year or so). Like I said no trackball or gamepad.

The keyboard do not have a trackball. They are cyborg v 5 keyboard and mad catz rat 3. The following link should give you an idea of what kind of hardware I have. The mouse software is the driver available from their website.
