Explosions going through walls

So...why do explosions go through walls and not DESTROY those walls?  I have to say I'm kind of against this.  Yes on my first game I cheesed it a "little" bit with my Brawlers acid gun with a splash radius of 7, but on my current Hard game my Siege exos Plasma launcher has a range of 26....26!  Not to mention 2800 damage.  It takes pretty much 2 careful shots of not-blowing-myself-up to clear an entire mission since the range is so massive it covers about 1/3 of most maps and goes through walls.

I think they should either not do this (because its downright silly), or at the very least destroy walls so you cant just shoot-through-walls infinity and just auto-win

I can definitely make aoe not go through walls, but I don't think that's actually what the players want.  Brawler Dissolvers diagonalling through walls, etc.

As for actually destroying the walls, sorry, but we explored the destructible terrain thing extensively during the prototyping phase and it's a mess in terms of balance, playability, art, etc.

Could that be one of those possible conducts you mentioned in the permadeath thread?  That could be a way to do it without upsetting too many people / the balance:

"Contained Explosives (or Realist / There IS a Spoon / Shaped Charges / something else you can probably come up with a better name): Explosions no longer go through walls.  Heartbreaking, we know."

Explosions going through walls kind of bugs me as well. It really does feel like an exploit. I have a hard time not taking a siege along because of this, what with it being able to clear levels all by itself.

Maybe you could make it a brawler-specific ability? I honestly find myself JUST using the dissolver when I play with a Brawler, but being able to reach through walls with its other oddly-shaped aoe weapons would make them more appealing and add some distinctiveness to it.

This could also be made a weapon-specific ability.  The Dissolver would have it, the Volatizers would probably be another one that should have this, giving them a much needed boost in usefulness over other weapons, and also have Overload do this (both explosion types), since hitting around corners and such seemed to be one of the major points of Overload in the first place.

Other AoE effects though, yeah, I'm thinking they should not be able to do it at all.   Things like the Siege Exo's weapons or the Plasma Cannons and such are already very strong, they dont need to go through walls.

I think, if you were able to make some of the exempted versions count tiles around corners instead of going directly through a wall, that would be nice. That is, a radius of 4 will curve around a U-turn and hit a bot that's nominally 2-tiles away.

Plasma Cannons with 4 shots, radius 10, and 12K damage are, to me, more OP than turrets.
