Bionic Dues crashing at startup
« on: October 09, 2013, 02:17:07 pm »
Hi,

I bought bionic dues today, but it seems to crash almost everytime at startup.
Sometimes it just crashes, without any message, other times it displays a warning saying "duplicate handle failed". The game does seem to start, and I get to the GameInit screen - which typically gets to 3 and then crashes (sometimes it goes further).

I looked at the log files and gc.log just says:" Last error code: 3e6", and I am attaching ArcenDebug.log and output_log.txt

My laptop has an AMD E-450 1.65GHz, with 4Gb of RAM with Radeon HD Graphics, running Windows 7 64bit.

Any help is much appreciated!
thanks

Hi there,

Sorry to hear about your trouble -- generally with this it means that there is antivirus that's interfering with the game.  You may want to make an exception in your antivirus rules for the game, and/or temporarily disable antivirus.  There seems to be a false positive with Norton antivirus in the current versions.

Hope that helps!

You might try verifying your steam files, and possibly if you have a gamepad/flight stick that is plugged in and giving some strange input, then there may be a problem there.  The only instances I've heard of with this sort of thing were either with antivirus (every case in the past except one) and a gamepad issue (one issue detailed in a thread further down).

Some more specific threads with resolutions for the people involved:

(short story: in Avast, try "Uncheck: Settings -> Toubleshooting -> Enable hardware-assisted virtualization" )

It didn't... Turning off hardware virtualization in AVAST did not make any difference

I did verify the integrity of the steam files and it always comes up with 1 file that doesn't check out, but only after I try to run the game. If I verify integrity right after steam redownloads that file, everything checks out (I'm guessing this is a configuration file that gets changed when the game runs). I tried reinstalling the game from steam but it still gives me the "DuplicateHandle failed" error.

This is a thinkpad, with one of those trackpoints plus a normal touchpad. I tried disabling each one in turn and the problem still persists.

The game runs fine in my other laptop (which also runs avast as an antivirus), but I would really like to be able to play it in this one. this is pretty damn annoying.

Hmm, ok.  Did some more googling and came up with this:

http://steamcommunity.com/app/220780/discussions/0/846947320642006158/

Basically: try running the game in 98/ME compatibility mode, that stopped crashes in that Unity game running alongside Avast (note: disabling Avast hasn't worked for a lot of these issues, presumably because the antivirus isn't really fully disabled, whatever it may claim).

If that's actually the resolution for you then that's totally insane, but, well, I guess I should expect that from computers :)

Well, I guess this is really crazy because the game does not crash anymore, if I run it in Win98/ME mode. The problem is that no images appear in the menus... There is a message on the top right corner saying that a fatal error occurred and that I should report it.

If I choose new game (the text for the buttons does show) I get to the player selection screen but not images appear there as well, so I can't really select anything.

So, you really think this is Avast's fault? I guess I can switch to a different antivirus...

It messes up the image loading instead?  Wonderful... I guess I should have known it wouldn't be so easy.

Yea, I'm pretty Avast is a culprit here.  There can always be more than one thing wrong, but when I google this issue I get results from people having this with other Unity-based games who are also running Avast (some who were running Kapersky, which is another antivirus we've had trouble with in the past).  Same with the Fatal-error-in-gc error message that we've gotten from a bunch of people; tons of unity games are getting that when run alongside Avast.

Anyway, I'm certainly not suggesting "don't use an antivirus" is the solution here (it's a dangerous internet and all that), but the fact is that part of what antivirus programs do is stop other programs from doing their jobs.  Which is fine until it tries to stop a program you didn't want it to stop.  At that point the antivirus needs to provide a reasonable way for you to say "please leave that alone", which doesn't seem to be the case here.

So my suggestion is:

1) For diagnosis purposes, uninstall Avast _completely_, restart the computer, etc, and then try the game.  If you're still getting problems then apparently something else is going on (or Avast is more tenacious than it appears), though I haven't the foggiest what it would be.  If you're concerned about security during this step, perhaps disconnect from the internet first.

2) If running it without Avast works, yea, finding a different antivirus would be something to consider.  To my knowledge Avast has been aware of the unity-related false positives for some time and has not resolved them.

I replaced avast by AVG, which is better and lighter anyway, and now the game runs perfectly, without having to set any compatibility options, or worrying about pointing devices and stuff.
This is weird, since I did disable all the AVAST shields and it apparently was still running something that messed up the game.

Just thought of give you an update for future reference, in case anyone encounters this problem.

thanks for all the effort. The game does look very good.

Awesome, thank you for the update!  AVG Free is what I use as well, and I also really love it.  Glad it is doing well for you. :)

Awesome, glad to hear it's working :)  Yea, not sure what's up with Avast.  I totally get that an antivirus having false positives is not something they can 100% avoid, but the user needs to be able to override the antivirus in those cases.
