Title: Bionic Dues 1.005 "Combined Customization" Released!
Post by: x4000 on October 28, 2013, 02:09:03 PM
Original: http://arcengames.blogspot.com/2013/10/bionic-dues-1005-combined-customization.html

This one is our first non-beta-branch update to Bionic Dues since it released, and so it comes with a plethora of goodies from 1.001 on upwards in the release notes linked above.

The biggest thing, by far, are the improvements to the customization interface.  The game supports a minimum resolution of 1024x720, and so our previous customization interface basically adhered to that at the expense of using the screen space of larger resolutions.  Now on resolutions that are 1280x768 or higher, you get a new and easier-to-use customization interface that combines a number of functions into one screen.  If you prefer the old interface for some reason, there is a settings option that lets you re-enable that.

A number of balance improvements are also in this version.  Sentry turrets are no longer OP.  Groups of ClawBots are no longer death on wheels.  Tuck now has an improved special ability.  And the pistol has been buffed quite a bit.  Among other things.

Enjoy!

This is a standard update that Steam will automatically download for you.  However, if you want to force a quicker update and are currently running Steam, just restart Steam.

Cool stuff!
FYI: You might want to post an Announcement over on the Steam forums, there seems to be a reasonable amount of folks there who are into the game but do not frequent the Arcen forums...

Thanks for working on this! Are current savegames compatible with it?

They should be, and if they aren't it's a bug. Arcen is very good about savegame compatibility.

Yea, if it breaks an old save please send us that save ASAP so we can fix the issue before too many people run into it :)

Great job on the customisation interface. I didn't tried the beta updates (but followed what was in) so this is the first time I actually try it. :D

Hooray. The first non-beta update post-release update. I'm gonna have to try this now.
Come to think of it, I haven't tried Skyward collapse yet either...

Crud, my Arced "cred" is deteriorating, I need to fix this fast.  :P

Well, I played a save from 1.0.0 for about an hour last night and there were no problems, so thanks for your carefulness here! I'll let you know if anything changes.

Is Steam the only way to get this update? I'm mobile and have dropped my Steam install onto a flash drive.

Yea, it's the only supported way.  I could probably get you an updated copy of the relevant files (for windows, /Bionic_Data/Managed/Assembly-CSharp.dll is all our actual game code, and \RuntimeData\Language\en\a_bionic.xml is all the loca strings), but that would rely on me remembering if there were any images added or changed, or something that required recompiling the asset bundle, etc.

I don't think it would be very safe ;)

I will figure something out, but thanks. I'm a *little* dismayed at Arcen relying on Steam this way, not much, but a li'l bit. I assume this has less to do with implementing DRM, and more to do with saving costs and time with distributing patches?

I do appreciate you not roping the game into SteamWorks, so I can still get a technically DRM-free copy of the game, but I will miss the easy in-game updates that came with AI War. Are there plans to do this with any of your existing games, like AI War?

Yea, it has literally nothing to do with DRM.  Bionic is easier to pirate than AIW, but at least we wouldn't be paying the bandwidth for updating the pirate copies and there's no chance of a pirate "claiming" someone's legit key.

It's just cheaper for us this way both in time and money, and that's fairly important.

I'm not aware of any such plans, no.

The other reason here is that we don't have a good way of distributing patches on linux aside from Steam.  For AI War or similar, likely any version that was linux specific would be steam-only, but beyond that I don't plan to shift things on older titles to be steam-only.

I appreciate the explanation. I'm sure that I speak for a very minor subset of your fans, but for me personally, being tied to some form of DRM is a pretty significant thing. I've been enjoying Bionic Dues so far, and it's good to know that I can play it wherever I would like to without being tied down.

We hate DRM too, don't worry. That's not changed. :)

Let me jump back in with this one suggestion, and I'll make a Mantis if you feel it is something within the realm of possibility. I obviously am one of a few who like to have my game universes in my pocket, and with this game's updates tied to Steam, this hamstrings me a bit.

What I can personally do to resolve this is go back to my home machine, update the base installation there, and use synching software like SyncBack to copy over the new/changed files to my drive, without wiping out my saves or settings. It's a hassle, but a fairly minor one.

Would Arcen consider a midway for this use case: an executable, a "Bionic Dues Flash Packer," that comes with the Steam game. When you run it, it asks for a location, then copies the game files to that location, updates them if they are already there, and doesn't wipe out saves, settings, or any other user files?

I'm no programmer, but this might be accomplished with something as simple as a batch file or an AutoHotKey script converted to an executable.

Arcen isn't caring about the DRM. They need a way to supply updates to the game on all supported platforms. This now includes Linux, which GoG does not handle (http://www.gamingonlinux.com/articles/gogcom-dont-plan-on-introducing-linux-support-in-the-foreseeable-future-updated.2369/).

I really hope the Linux sales are working out for you. Personally, I love having the option. Steam's native support for Ubuntu is really helping.

The linux sales, compared to windows sales, are simply awful.  But we didn't do it expecting a short-term payoff.

Enjoying this version so far, customization is much better now.

Right now I was a little annoyed because my science bot got destroyed because a silence bot redirected my damage to the nearest fuel tank... I guess that's intentional, but in that case please edit the description of silence bot accordingly, right now it reads like the bot will transfer damage to other bots within radius "x", not fuel tanks. I never considered fuel tanks to be bots.

Oh and I also like the new art concept of the exos, they look more like exos now.

Just to make sure, I don't mean the models on the map but the icons on the left, they seem more humanoid now and less "blocky", but that might just be my imagination of course.

It is, I am afraid ;). I am a fairly thorough follower of the change notes and I am *fairly* sure there has been no such change mentioned there...

did you change your resolution?  I know the new gear handling system is only available on certain resolutions, if you changed your res to accomadate that it could have had an impact on how the icons look.

Hello,

I have noticed that since this release, when you hover your mouse over the items (in the customisation screen) they flicker really fast between what appears to be two different pop-up boxes. I know I should post this in Mantis but I need to figure Mantis out. Only have few minutes etc. excuses...

By the way the new customization screen is brilliant and massively improves the player's experience of the game.  :D

If you're able to post a save, give me an example of a part I can mouseover to get the problem, tell me the exact resolution you're using, and whether you're using windowed or fullscreen that would help a lot :)

There was  a suggestion of putting in a rogue mode into bionic dues where you can lose your exo and equipment. Is that still going to happen? Have been away couple weeks so I was just wondering.
When I bought the game I assumed it was already in the game and to be honest I think it shouldv been in
the game at the release.

1920 x 1080, full screen

it would flicker on the customise screen even if you started a new game.

I think the game has plenty of content for $10 :)

A set of optional "conduct" rules are planned for the first expansion, including one that "when an exo dies, it's gone for the rest of the game".  And so if you lose all 4, game over.

I think I see what GEIDI4 is referencing -- when you mouse over an unequipped part in the left panel of the customization screen, for a fraction of a section after the tooltip box is drawn, the top three "instruction" lines are not there, then they're added, pushing the part name and stats down. It's a really brief flicker but I was able to screenshot it if that's useful.

So you both mean that it flickers once when first using the customization screen, and then stops?  Yea, I know why it would do that.

Or that it continues to flicker while using it?
Title: Re: Bionic Dues 1.005 "Combined Customization" Released!

The unequipped part tooltip flickers every time you mouse over an unequipped item. Again, it's extremely fast, but it's there.

To me, it looks as if the code is doing the following:
1. Draw the normal part tooltip box like we do everywhere else.
2. Oh, we're looking at an unequipped part in the left panel of the customization screen, so add the three instruction lines at the top.

Step 2 is happening after the box has already been initially drawn so there's a "flicker" as it adds the text to the top of the box, moving the already displayed text down and making the box taller.

That sounds like what is happening with mine - usually it just keeps on flickering forever - no savegame required, it happens if I start any game.

If it helps I am running WIndows 8 with a NVidia Geforce GTX 650, driver version 327.23

Played a bit on ironman - after the first game and clicking about a bit the flickering seems to calm down. But a sure fire way to get it back is to put a search filter on the inventory, then they always flicker when you're holding a mouse point over it.

Apologies again for not putting this in Mantis.

For 1.006:

* Fixed a bug where the inventory hover tooltips in the new customization screen could flicker madly in fullscreen mode on some machines.  VSync could solve the problem, so it was probably a race condition related to framerate being very high.

Thanks :)

Wow, it's taken me this long to play the game...I feel ashamed. And I haven't actually gotten around to skyward collapse yet...

So, some very brief thoughts.

Interesting to see you going for the turn based "in world" (as opposed to overworld) thing at last (though again, if skyward collapse had this, I don't know for reasons given above). Come to think of it, wasn't AI War turn based way back in alpha? Frankly, the story does sort of feel like an "AI War on the ground" ripoff almost, except for the "nuke them all" risk at the end. However, I do think the AVWW 2 blended with AI War style overworld map system to be cool.
I haven't followed the development of this game, so I don't know if the "in world" maps are procedurally generated or not, or partially some "hybrid" of procedural and hand made sort of like AVWW 1, or "procedural selection of hand made chunks" style of AVWW 2.

EDIT: Oh yea, and I really like customization stuff. I always like this sort of min-maxing of RPG stats in ways that are dependent on roles, and this game really appealed to this.
