I did buy the special edition cause I enjoyed the game. But at that time, the special content wasn't in (the special character is in now). It's not mandatory in any ways, it's more of a "support the dev" edition. You'll be just fine with the 10$ one and I think it's worth it.

I am having a TON of fun with Desktop Dungeons.  I also bought the special edition for $20.  You also get a special building, but I don't know what it is because I have not progressed too far yet.  This is such a fabulous game.  I played it last year when it was still "low-res", and I really enjoyed it. 

But, they have added so much new stuff that it's almost a brand new game.  It is a huge game now.  You get so much wonderful content in this game.

I bought the special edition more than two years ago, and that time there was not difference between special edition and normal one. So, sorry, I'm not sure what the difference is.

When I downloaded the free version last year, it had just the basic graphics.  And, there was no world map or constructing new buildings or anything.  You just selected a race and class, and went into the dungeon.  Now, the graphics are outstanding and there is so much more to the game.

I thought that these were new additions in the past year.

The basic free version is still just the original game.  No changes.

The new graphics and all of the new gameplay stuff is the paid versions only.  Very, very different game at this point.  Very worth it, too.
